I've owned one since the beginning and I've never had a problem with it. That thing gets used more then my computers and half the time I write in these forums it is from my iphone while I'm out and about. Earlier in it's life cycle I picked up a 4gb version too just to tinker with the mods and everything else and it was miserable. Unlocking wasn't hard to do along with jailbreaking it, but the iphone went from a really useful piece of tech to complete junk once I started putting "3rd party" programs on it. After that I restored it and now it sits in my dresser. My 8gb has remained up to date and is on the AT&T service. I've never had a problem and love damn near everything about it. As for the internet being slow, it can be, but if you can't wait 10-15 seconds for a page to load up you need to go get some therapy. Also I'd say 90% of the time I'm hooking up to others WiFi and I can cruise the internet as fast as my laptop can. Also I'll have to find the link but I guess the EDGE network is getting a speed bump here shortly. Its going from something like 250kbps to 550 kbps. Anywho, if you are going to wait for the 3g version I'd start saving now, I have a feeling those are not going to be cheap, but I'd definitely have to recommend the iPhone itself because it is a quality piece of hardware and the interface is incredibly easy.

Life is all about ass, you're either covering it, hauling it, laughing it off, kicking it, kissing it, busting it, trying to get a piece of it, or behaving like one.

It was worth $900 when it came out. Now it's worth maybe $200-$300 imo...I wouldn't buy it I don't think. Do some research

Its not the standard 8800 - its a new version called the 8800 'Arte'. Its made from special materials, or so crap like that.
The limited edition has a shappire gem as the main button, and is currently worth over £1100
Im not going for it though, it has limited features like the original 8800.

I LOVE my iPhone. I have had no problem at all...and use it more than I use my laptop! I haven't unlocked it...but have considered it. Haven't gotten to that yet. The internet is slow on the AT&T network, but now dial-up slow. Bluetooth works AWESOME for headset...and that's what I use it for. All-in-all...it's the best phone/PDA I've EVER owned.
