HD resolutions, just confirming.
Hi guys,
I did a search but can't find an answer - on here and google. I do suck at searching skills though
My question is this;
I had a crappy brand 32" hd tv for a few months, it was £299 so I thought 'bargain!'.
The black border at the top starting bleeding into the picture a few days ago so I took it back and got a refund luckily, then went and bought a *GOOD* tv lol, more importantly it wasn't cheap so therefore it's way better than the previous one.
It's a samsung 32lcdr8, and what I want to know is what resolution would be defined as HD? I've always used a MS VGA AV cable and on the crappy LCD tv (while it was working) allowed me to output at 1280x720 - this was 720p I was guessing.
But my samsung won't allow me to output at that res, instead it'll allow me a maximum of 1360x768. It's one step from 1080p, and it's a higher res than 1280x720 so is it still HD?
The picture quality is alot sharper than the lower res' (obviously!) so I was just thinking I could get a little clarification from you guys
Thanks for any replies!
Antony

so yep, you have 720p(HDTV)...which is kinda better than 1080i, and you really can't tell the difference b/w 720p and 1080p

So, even though I'm outputting at 1360x768 or 1280x768, are either of those still officially HD?
Sorry I'm confused because it won't let me select 1280x720, it just says 'mode not supported' on the tv... which is strange.

1080i is better than 720p simply because 1080i is a higher resolution. Yes 1080i is interlaced, but you don't see any "artifacts" or "distortion" because of it assuming you have a half decent HDTV. With the 360 however, almost all games are 720p so any difference seen between selecting 1080i and 720p is from the 360s and/or HDTVs scalers/video processor/deinterlacer
HD officially starts at 1280x720. Anything higher is HD, but may not be a common home theater resolution(which doesn't really matter as long as you're getting a good picture).

All of our over-the-air-broadcast channels here in Kansas City have digital. My TV tells me what resolutions each digital channel is broadcast at and I think the 720p channels look better than the 1080i channels. My TV is native 720p, so I figured that's why... but I wondered if the fact that it was interlaced had anything to do with it? @ Deathwish. It's a sammy plasma.

I doubt deinterlacing has anything to do with as I've never heard of Samsungs having deinterlacing issues. It probably has more to do with poorer quality video encoding and what not.
Have you seen DiscoveryHD? That's the best looking channel I've ever seen

Yeah, everywhere in the world does, including us.
I believe there are a couple of free channels in HD that are on the horizon though.
