Do you like how each merchant or vendor has a set amount of caps? I would often have to carry shit from one person to another and then from city to city to sell. Not to mention i have a piece of armor that is 600 caps its hard to find someone with caps to trade in for it. I just think its pretty annoying.

when i have armor or lasers that are worth 999 caps i go to the trader before selling anything i go through his ammo and buy up everything that is useful to me, then go through his guns buying any sniper rifles or any that are a bit rare to find (using them to repair my unique weapons) then go through his armour buying re-con (to fix chinese stealth) and leather (fixes metal master) and then buy any chems i'm low on..
its also worth checking if they have any teddies, scrap metal, pre-war books, sugar bombs, etc etc, these can be bought for 1-3 caps, and sold for between 10-100..
by the time i've finished i usually owe the trader 1000-2000 caps, and then start selling him the armor and guns i've collected and repaired.
if you do this every few days of play you'll find your never short of caps or ammo, and always have rare items to repair your uniques..
another very useful tip..
invest in crazy wolf gang 'twice' (with uncle roe) and wait 3 game days (i used the back button wait function) and then crazy will repiar your items up to 97% (puts your alien blaster up to 100 damage) and he gives you 6 stealth boys

Jan's got it right. Just think of it as your own little economy. You have to buy from, as well as sell to the traders. And if you want to have more options or trade partners you need to invest in the caravans. Invest in them twice if you can. They will give you stuff(Lucky Harith will give you a mini-nuke). And you have to help protect them as well. Kill off raiders like Sam Warrick. There are only 4 main caravans, if they are killed off, this effects what inventory Craterside Supply or Flack N Scrapnel will have and how much they can buy from you. But all this being said, at the end, you have more money and stuff than everyone. Way more than you really need or can use. But hey, as we say in Texas, "Better to have a gun and not need it, than to need one and not have it"

oh yeah!! amen to that!!!
lol
i do have way more bullets and caps than i'll ever need in this game, but its great when i can 'decide' that i don't want to explore an area, or i do not need to find bullets chems etc i can just run through and do the mission with no distractions...
and the traders stock up.. always...
so keep buying everything they have, and they'll get more

Hmmm, never new about investing in the traveling caverns. I can't ever seem to find them. Where is this crazy wolf dude. How much do you need to invest? 100 caps 1000 caps

Here you go - Merchant Empire - Fallout Wiki - The Vault
Bring some spare change, 2800 caps in all to fully invest in two traders.

You should have a trader's route map in your Pip-Boy detailing their stops. I would say park in front of Rivet City and wait in 12-13 hour increments, one of them will show up eventually. If something has happened to them, then the guy that you talked to in Canterbury would mention something like "they've fallen off the face of the earth" or something similar.
