Saving Car Designs

If I design a paintjob for a certain car, how do I save it so I can just paste it onto any other car? I was doing one earlier, and when I saved the design it like saved for that car...and if I tried to put it on any other, or went into the design catalog, it wouldn't show up b/c the car was different...?
