Does the gamescore/achievements get you anything (sorry, just got my XBOX) like free downloads or anything or is it just a tally so to speak?

Yes they do. Last year Microsoft gave away free arcade games, MS Points, and other stuff in their Rewards campaign. Also if you go to this link you can win all kinds of crap by gaining achievement points.

According to Official Xbox 360 Magazine (OXM), the game Avatar is the easiest game to get GS on. Apprently you can get 1000 in 20 minutes. :S
