It explains it a little in Gears one, About being court marshalled for disobeying an order to try and save his family, or something?

He went against and order to try and save his dad, but he found out that his dad was already dead, and he was put in jail. Something like that anyway.

Kind of stupid, because there was a war going on. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison for desertion. He was free when the locusts attacked the jail.
