Can you discover shops on your own or does the game have to direct you?

There are only Cloths shops. Look on the map that came with the game, thats all the places you can go.

Although there is the second bowling alley on the western shore of the middle island that doesn't show up on the map until you go there the first time. Is that what you were referring to?

ya u have area's u have to find urself like resturants ect.
i wanna find the porno shop to get the dildo to throw at people but still not come across it yet
is it on the map that came with the game as well? ill av to check it out

No, thats one of the few places you can go in to. Although you find it on a mission in the very begining, it may not be open later.
