Messages from the flood.

Near the end, when you're on your way to overload the flood ship and destroy part of the flood infestation on the ark, you get a message from the flood hivemind saying "Child of my enemy, why have you come? I offer no forgiveness for father's sins passed to his sons". Aside from this, in Halo 2, when chief asked who he was he said "I am a monument to all your sins".

Now, I haven't read the books or anything, but I've been told that the humans are a less technolodgically advanced group of the Forerunner's descendants. If this is the case, is he referring to something that the Forerunner's did when they fought the flood before the Human/Covenant war? What sins is he talking about? Did the Forerunners accidentally create the Flood somehow?
