Do checkpoints get saved?

I kind of assumed that checkpoints are "autosaves". So I quit game after playing for 3 hours (just hit exit and didn't do Save and Exit). Next time I come back I at same place I started a while ago, 3 hours of progress lost
So if I don't do Save and Quite, all progress gets lost, or was it a glitch? So if your Xbox crashes you out of luck right? What about XP points that I got, am I going to get double?
Any advice on how can I advance without wasting another 3 hours?

If you use save and exit it will save the last check point. EXP only applies to Multi-player.

Yeah if you dont save and exit, Then all the progress will be lost.
