GRAW Review by lithium

Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior Review by Lithium

Quote:
GRAW

GRAW was my first XBOX 360 game which is probably why I like it so much, but even without my peronal love for it, its great. The game takes place in Mexico and you play as Scott Mitchell, a member of the ghosts. The story isn't too complex but the in-game helicopter cut-scenes tell enough.

At first you will play through the training mission which is acceptable, but I did get stuck in the beginning wondering what the hell should I do next. *worth mentioning that I had a bit of difficulty reading the text on my 54cm SDTV, but that is probably just my TV's fault*. In the Training mission, you learn how to use your map, squad-tactics and how to use diiferent weapons, etc.

Over the main story there isn't much Location variation, but what you see is very good to look at. Your character and your team-mates look excellent but enemies appear less-detailed. The lighting is very good, and seeing as its set in Mexico, its put to good use. Nice explosions and a good-framerate help give this game a good look. Obviously it's not as pretty as newer titles like GOW, but if it was released now, I would still be happy with the graphics.

The basic contols in this game are like most shooters:

Left-joystick=character movement
Right-joystick=crosshair movement
RT=fire
LT=zoom in

But by pressing why you can take cover and you can tell your team-mates to take cover at the point where your crosshair points by pressing A. Controls can be very fiddly but it does the job.
If your Teamates die, you can go on, but its best to keep them alive, since fighting on your own can be difficult, esspecially if you lose them early on and you have to go on your own for the rest of the mission.

But to me this game shines in the longevity department.
I spent around a month completing the SP on "normal" and that was playing GRAW only, and it was great fun. Afterwards I completed it on "harcore" in about 2 weeks, and it wasw still fun. As opposed to GOW that only took me a week to complete, I'm very chuffed with that.

You can also replay any mission you want once you completed the SP.
I do not have LIVE so I cannot experience MP, but I also have fun playing on MP maps against 50 bots!, nice. In MP the cover-system dissapears and movement isn't as fluid anymore, reloading is also differnet in MP, but its still fun just playing against bots. The character customisation is limited but its okay.

Overall then, I love this game, This was presisely the game I needed when I could only get one game. If you need a bargain-game, there is no beter choice than GRAW.

Pro's
Good GFX, fun gameplay, Beefy SP, Good MP, nice story.

Con's
Fiddly controls, samey environments.

RATINGS

Graphics: 8.5/10 very good lighting with good charcter models but enemies lack datail and this game is about a year old afterall.

Gameplay: 7/10 can be fiddly, but its good, fun tactical shooting with a steep difficulty, just how I like it.

Sound: 7/10 The gun sounds are quite authentic but the squad can be annoying, but I'm not a sound-wizz anyway.

Longevity: 9/10 Hard and lentghy SP and it's fun a second time around. Playing against bots on MP is great fun so playing against real people can only be good aswell.

OVERALL (not an average) 8.5/10 GRAW is a great game, it will last long and its at bargain prices now so go get it!

Splinter Cell Review

Splinter Cell Double Agent Review by True777

Quote:
Splinter Cell Double Agent

Story Mode:
In the story mode you dont have to complete all the objectives as in other games, in this game doing the objectives for the terrorists gives you trust with them and doing objectives for the NSA gives you trust with them, i really like the idea of the trust system, and if you lose your hole bar with either of them " Game Over "

The missions are fun, the story is good, the one thing that i really hate about the story mode are the JBA Headquarter Missions , borning as hell..

In the story you'll find yourself

-Lock Picking
-Optic Cable ( allows you to look into room, kind of like snake cam on rainbow6 vegas)
-Hack Computers
-Hack Locks
-Crack Saves

I really enjoyed those stuff above, makes me feel like a Agent ....

The Story mode in my opinon is long enough..

Story Mode- 4/5

Multiplayer:

I personally think that they could of improved on multiplayer the online co-op you dont even play the real story mode you pratictly play what you play on normal matchs, there is only 2 game modes you can play

-Spys vs Upsilon Mercenaries
Spys must hack two intel points and bring files to control drone and Upsilon Mercenaries must protect the missions objects and kill the intruders. Its fun but i dont find it lasts..

-Co-op Challenges Mode
like what you play in the above but instead your vs bots...

Story Mode: 4/5
Multiplayer: 3.5/5
Overall (not an average) 8/10

Kinda short compared to V0lc0m

this took 9mins..

FEAR review

Fear Review by finch150

Quote:
F.E.A.R

Story: Intresting, fast-paced and exciting. However some times the story can get too complicated or you didnt here your orders because you were in a firefight. It does get quite disturbing after a while especially near the end, waiting for something to jump out at you round the next corner, always has you on the edge of your seat!
Graphics: Its is hard to make grey corridors look amazing but the slo-mo does look pretty good. Charecter models are detailed enough but lack texture. Cut-scenes very between beautiful and last-gen, when their good their great, when their bad there awful.
Sound: There are of course eerie sound effects, which are great and well suited but the music doesnt really stand out in any way, bland and unexciting. Gun sounds are good but sometimes annoying, voice acting is understandably hard to make sound good, but in F.E.A.R its quite good.
Multiplayer: Its hard to pinpoint my exact dislike for F.E.A.R's multiplayer, it might be that because only 2 gameplay modes offer only ONE person slo-mo abilitys, it feels alien from the single player. Where as in single player the player has to rely on slo-mo to survive, "Normal-mo" gunplay is mostly used in multiplayer.

Overall: F.E.A.R's single player excels most over First person shooters on the 'box but loses all of its charm in multiplayer where you begin to feel as if youve only brought half a game. Great but flawed

7/10

Gears Of War Review

Gears of War review by WelshDragon360

Quote:
So, here we are. The most hyped game on 360 yet is finally out. Is it worthy of the hype? Is this 'Halo Killer' another good, but average attempt to topple Xbox's king?

You play as Marcus Fenix who is in jail for unknown reasons. You get freed by your friend Dom whom askes for your help. On the fictional planet of Sera, humans have been in a bitter war with monsters known as the Locust for well over a decade. You, an ex-marine (or COG, as they call you), are now needed to help them fight the good fight.
This is all you know and nothing else is really explained to you throughout the game about the back story. This really doesn't matter, though, as every cutscene and section of dialouge really makes you connect to the characters who have TONS of personality. The story isn't the strongest in the world, but the stuff that's in there is very entertaining.

The first thing you'll notice is just how goddamn great this game looks. I'm not one to be a graphics whore, but this game gives me the urge to get slutty and bang the hell out of it. The visuals are seriously that good. Whether it's blood dripping off a nearby pillar, the sun shining on your armor or a building that's been blown halfway to hell in the distance - everything looks as sharp as humanly possible. I did look for flaws, I really did, but I failed to see any fault with the look of the game in the slightest

As you make your way through the prison you quickly realise how this game works. You simply cannot run and shoot, you'll be on the ground losing a lot of blood before you know what hit you. My personal moto for this game was 'Duck, cover and pop'. Meaning that you absolutely must use cover at all times. The health system works very much like in games such as Call of Duty. You have a gear appear on screen that gets bigger everytime you're shot. If the gear gets a certain size you die. If you take cover, it decreases in size until it leaves you fully healed.

Luckily, taking cover is as easy as 1-2-3. By simply pressing the 'A' button near an object/wall you'll push up against it instantly taking cover. A good 80% of everything in the game are able to be used as cover so you'll never find yourself in a situation where you can't find some shelter. You run using 'A' also, so by simply charging straight into something makes you use it as cover instantly. It makes it extremely seamless and easy to do. Very handy when a wave of bullets are heading your way.
Whilst using cover you can do a number of things by yet another simple press of 'A'. Diving from cover-to-cover is your main move, which is exceptionally handy when you need to get away from an incoming frag and, just as importantly, it looks extremely cool.

The enviroments in which you fight in are extremely varied and rich in detail. This is mostly because of the immense graphics, but also because of the sheer size of them. Sure, it's quite linear at heart. Most times there's one route to go and that's it. But who really cares? Resident Evil 4 was the same and that was the best game of the last 5 years. This is very much the same in that respect. It doesn't try to be incredibly open ended in the slightest, but it's got such good design and variation in the levels that it doesn't need to be.

The game is split up into 5 Acts and on each Act you'll be in a considerably different enviroment from the last. Whether it's the wrecked streets, underground cave lair of the Locust or a speeding train - it always stays fresh. I was not expecting much variation in the envrioment at all, and I think the fact I got some of the best level design I've ever seen is one of the best things about this game.

The Locust themselves are pretty mean bastards. From the start you have an option of playing on either 'Casual' or 'Hardcore'. I went with Hardcore, so I can't comment on Casual that much. On Hardcore, you have to watch yourself extremely closely. One rushed corner and you have a chainsaw ripping through your throat. Some bits take a lot of patience, and luckily the checkpoints are in great numbers. You'll seldom have to go through a big part over and over again because the game saves before any big fight which it knows you may die in. This may make it sound easy, but trust me, you'll be thankful. I died a good 5-10 times in some places, and not having to do a shitload to get back to that point was awesome.

Your enemies and guns are all extremely well designed and meaty. Granted, none do anything new that you haven't seen before, but they fit the game exceptionally well.
The Locust are extremely ugly and sound terribly scary, which is just what you want from them. The guns are extremely big and pack a helluva punch. When you shoot someone, you know about it. Trust me.

Which leads me onto the gore. Oh boy. This game is terribly disgusting. It ranges from shooting off limbs with your assault rife, to shooting them in half with a shotgun and, get ready for it, cutting them up with your chainsaw at the end of your assault rifle. Yes, you have a chainsaw on your gun for all that close quarter combat. It's as fun as it sounds and then some.
The detailed blood and guts is so, so sickening, but at the same time so fucking pleasurable. I have far too much joy out of watching one of the Locust get cut up with the chainsaw. Hell, I don't even mind being cut up with it, still fun to watch!

Going through it on Hardcore will probably take the best part of 12hrs. Yes, it's not the longest game in the world, but you really won't mind. It will be some of the most fun 12hrs you ever have.
Then you have Insane difficulty which is unlocked after completing Hardcore. To say this is hard is an understatement. I've only played a little bit by myself and I got destroyed.

Your best bet is to do it via co-op. Co-op? Didn't I mention this gem? Darn! Ok, here's the low-down. You can play with a friend at anytime. They can jump right in the game with you and you continue from where you are. No seperate game, no seperate save, they can help you on a hard bit then jump right back out leaving you on your way. How cool is that?
Even cooler is the fact you can also do this online with someone halfway along the world. Loners with no friends rejoice!

Online is where the lifespan of this game really gets bumped by a good oh...few hundred hours though. Let me just say I am not an online gamer at all. I play online sometimes, but for the most part it doesn't interest me. This game, however, is so fun online I can't stop. I've already played a good 15hrs online in the 3 days I've had it. Yes, I know, I'm already losing my life to it.
There is seriously nothing as good as getting in a game with a few mates and blasting each other to bits.

It 'only' supports up to 8 players for 4v4 action, but this is great. It's not the type of game where you want 22 people running around at a time. It's a game of tactics and teamwork. You stay in groups, take cover together, and try and take out the other team the best you can. You simply wouldn't have this sense of teamwork with more players. The wide choice of maps are all rather small, but this is a good thing for the same reason. You're never more than 10 seconds away from an enemy.
The game types online are rather varied, though to be honest I've not really ventured outside of deathmatch much. Most of them are your basic formulas spiced up a bit.

This game was branded a 'Halo Killer' months before it was out. Even moreso now that it is out. Is that justified? Ha! Halo doesn't deserve to mentioned in the same breath as Gears of War. This is next-gen gaming defined. You have intense action, in varied and detailed enviroments, with kick ass weapons and enemies, with solid online play that will keep you hooked for months.
This is the new benchmark for games. Trust me when I say I think it will be a long, long time before it is matched. Zelda will have to be VERY good to take Game of the Year away from this game.

Just get it. Now. Go.

Call of Duty 3 review

Call of Duty 3 review by Simon

Quote:
By Simon

Call of duty 3 is a World War 2 shooter, the sequel to one of the Xbox 360’s best sellers since November 2005. However, unlike its prequel, it is made by Treyarch and differs from it quite a lot.

If both, Call of Duty 2 and 3 were being played next to each other, most would not believe that call of duty 3 follows the brand. The visuals in the game have improved significantly, improving the atmosphere greatly of war. Along side this; the amount of action on screen at once has improved fantastically as well. Shells dropping at your feet every few seconds, soldiers dropping and bits of building breaking down on you will give you the feeling, “good god, this IS war”. The atmosphere is fantastic, on the single player, but also on the multiplayer.

The single player focuses on the Normandy breakout, 1944. The single player starts with a frustrating un-skippable cutscene. Your first task in the game, like CoD2, is to complete the basic training. After this, you go straight to battle and suddenly meet a very different game. Artillery falling everywhere shocks the player being used to the occasional artillery strike on previous WW2 games. The amount of players on screen also shocks the player with many bodies dropping like fish. New features are also available, such as the ability to throw back grenades. This is a neat trick, but also with devastating consequences for example, when the grenade indicator pops up, and you are looking for the grenade to throw it back but can’t find it resulting in it blowing up in your face. However, this feature is a nice little touch to the game. As well as this, we can say hello to a all new feature, hand to hand combat. However it’s not what it all seems. There are certain points in the level where you will have to press certain buttons at certain times, to beat the German soldier into submission. This is a nice touch, varying the game play from the run and shoot tactics.

The game also focuses on a more of a ‘drama’ theme than CoD2’s basic run and gun, which proved to be successful. You will have to wait through cut scenes every time you play the game, and watch in some parts, a cheesy storyline. Not nice, huh? However, on the single player, you fight on the American, British, Canadian, and Polish side all running at the same time, from level to level all with their own un-interesting storylines. However, being several different nationalities is a nice touch, taking you to different settings of the war. Unlike Medal of Honor games, you will not need to seek health packs if you receive an injury from a stray bullet. All you need to do, following Halo’s technique, is take cover for a few seconds and gather your health back. The use of vehicles in single player are available again at certain points in the mission, and like CoD2s vehicle parts, are mediocre and nothing exiting. From a tank chase mission, to driving in the countryside of France. The single player is shorter than the CoD2’s single player, and although there is more action and you are able to do more things, is not as strong as the CoD2’s perfect campaign. CoD3’s campaign, unlike CoD2’s campaign does not make the player feel the same vibe as when playing CoD2, of ‘I can’t put this down’. That said, the campaign has its strong points that are extremely impressive and makes it better than most other WW2 game campaigns.

Online, generally being more popular than the single player, we see a large change from Call of duty 2’s multiplayer. First off, we have the significant rise in the amount of players. From CoD2’s 8 players on screen, we move on to 24 players on screen. This is a good move, as it improves the amount of action on screen but more importantly, makes the game more exiting. As well as the player change, we also now have ‘player classes’. This follows sweetly, the successful Battlefield 2: MC scheme, allowing different players to have different ‘roles’ in battle. We can now see players to have the ability to become for example, a Medic being able to heal fallen soldiers; a scout, whose class enables the player to call upon artillery strikes on a designated area and a couple more from heavy infantry, light infantry and support. Different classes, giving different abilities gives the game a nice touch.

Unlike the run and gun, technique from CoD2, more tactics are needed. Standing still in the open for more than 20 seconds will generally end up in you being shot, or run over. Yes, run over. Yet another feature, again reminding us of battlefield 2, are vehicles. As well as the large amount of players running freely around the battlefield, there is a new threat. Tanks, generally being the most frightful enemy as they are ‘killing machines’ Two or more players are able to enter every vehicle. Soldiers are now able, to ride in Jeeps with a gun attached to the back, motorcycles with a side car and as stated before, tanks. Not all is bad as a simple change in class, will get you a rocket launcher, a new addition to the CoD franchise. During each game, your character will ‘level up’ thus carrying more grenades/smoke grenades. However, unlike Rainbow 6 Vegas, you will lose your level up at the end of the game.

Already, new maps available on the marketplace make the game a great buy. The maps already featured in the game are greatly designed; places for sniping and covering are well placed. There are large maps and very large maps available. There are no maps the size of burgundy, on CoD2 which would have been interesting playing. The game modes have also been altered. ‘Deathmatch’ and ‘Team Deathmatch’, has now been changed to ‘Battle’ and ‘Team battle’ but the idea of the game remains the same. Other game modes, such as ‘Headquarters’, have also been changed, you now able to spawn, even if you have been killed on the defending side. This makes the game faster, and some would say harder. Search and Destroy no longer exists, which for some was an awful move as it was popular on CoD2. However, a game (possible replacing it) called ‘War’ has entered the franchise. In this game, each time battles it out to command a certain point across the map. Once that point has been taken, the point will move. The idea is to successfully take over the whole map being quite a nice addition to the game modes. However, a feature many greatly miss is the ‘Kill Cam’, the feature enabling you to see how you were killed. A frustrating move for many, by Treyarch. Games however can be ruined by lag, and also the fact it is extremely hard to get into lots of games. However, with an update this can be resolved. Ranked matches are already easier to get into than when it was first released, proving that Treyarch are trying to keep their customers happy.

Call of duty 3 is an impressive game, however many of the features have been changed for the worse. Call of duty 2 was a fantastic game itself. Why change what is great already, many say.

Overall, Call of Duty 3 will impress new player to the series, but perhaps disappoint a little to Call of duty 2 veterans because of the large change to the game. With a above average single player and a successful action packed multiplayer, this game only suffers from a few great points. However, if you're looking for a game most like war, this is the game for you!

Fifa 07 Review

Fifa 07 Review by V2olcom

FIFA 07 review by V2olcom

On the cover of FIFA 07 it says "this is the season" and it almost is but that unfinnished feeling hurts.
First off, the last-gen version of FIFA 07 is completely different from the next-gen version and is quite highly rated.
As you turn on your 360 and you see the main menu of FIFA 07 you know it's EA with logos and quality everywhere, EA deff know how to make menu's, but do they know how to make games?

There is a signifficantly smaller amount of leagues and teams in the 360 version but I don't even know the teams that were in the over leagues so thats not too bad. The features are good, There is a manager mode, which is good ( all I play on FIFA 07) and a challenge mode which is okay, but kindof hard, and theres a FIFA lounge mode which I don't understand. Why the "F" isn't there a custom cup or practise mode EA? You can also create a player but for some reason they always look the same when they are actually on the pitch. The graphics are good, but the kits don't have as much detail as opposed to RTWC but atleast the framerates good. Player likenesses are also good but the grass looks like a green carpet. They players sweat and get tired realistiaclly but they still look like plastic dummies constantly staring at you.( scary?)
I find the loading times very good and you can play as one player against a goalie while it's loading.
The commentary on the otherhand is awful with late responses and nonsesical comments. Great soundtrack though.

Now to the important part, the gameplay.
FIFA 07 on the 360 has a new physics engin which helps the game be more realistic but its also its downfall. Player collisions are awful. You can bump into your opponents five times in a row with you both halting like complete idiots for a second without even getting the ball and you can't believe the misses the oppositon make from inside the box. But atleast now goals have a nice variety as opposed to RTWC's header-only goals. The through ball also works nicely but the AI can be real stupid at times not going for clear oppenings.

I have enjoyed FIFA 07's manager mode alot which adds alot of replay value since you can tweak you team forever with hard matches and difficult player transferring. FIFA 07 is a good game, but with less teams than current versions, unfinnished physics and needing in a few modes it stops itself from being great.

Graphics: 83% good player likenesses, but bad grass and plasticine looks.

Gameplay: 72% fun, but needs a bit more work.

Sound: 67% bad commentary but good soundtarck.

Replay value: 80% good manger mode keeps pulling me back, needs a custom cup mode and more teams though.

Overall (not average): 74%

World Series of Poker Review

World Series of Poker Review by Finch150

World Series of Poker: Tournament of champions
2007 Edition

To start this review i have to say that when a poker video game comes out it isnt widely accepted because most people assume or believe that computer A.I will never match the intelligence of a human player. However this game aspires to change this, So this game has some proving to do. But because this is such an ambitious game the "World Series of Poker" has licenced a number of Poker Pro's to appear as opponents and one special player to appear as your mentor.

The story consists of travelling from casino to casino taking part in each casino's tournaments, which ultimately lead to landing a place in the "Tournament of Champions". However you are mentored by Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, who also offers some tutorial videos should you need them. The story feels slightly too long and the poker does get repetitive aswell as the commentary, which consists of about 5 phrases which are repeated over and over. Ther are various poker "Tools" you can unlock (Hand stats, Outs etc) but anyone profiencient in poker wont require this extra help

The charecter creation tool deserves a mention as it is quite deep, not enough to rival games like FNR 3 or Saints Row but still impressive. The "DigiMask" function is awesome because with just two snaps of your face the game puts you face on a ingame charecter, which can also be used in multiplayer. You can also customise your very own "Poker Room" with various furnishings and the like. There are ofcourse all kinds of clothes and accesories with which to make your player resemble yourself that little bit more!

Now the most important part, the A.I. The A.I is surprisingly good and even on Semi-pro still provides a decent challenge, they react as they should do according to their hands rank, their chip amount and various other things. They also know how to bluff which is good, however they also are able to read when you are bluffing. For example if you take to long to take your turn they will try and calulate if you are bluffing. However it does have its occasional glitchs like people going all in with a pair of two's or jack high, also sometimes the aniamtion for the "Chip throwing in" doesnt actually match the proper amount.

Last but not least, maybe most importantly the multiplayer. The multiplayer is excellent and puts the arcade game "Texas Hold'em" firmly in the shade. The lobby system is one of the best ive ever seen, showing each person's individual camera footage. Also during the actual game, when it is your turn your camera shows you face (or room) to all watching. Digimask charecter and customised poker rooms can be used which is a nice touch. Multiplayer comes in the main two flavours "Ranked" or "Player", which "TrueSkill" dictating who you play in Ranked.

Story: 7/10 (Exciting and enjoyable but ultimately repetitive)

Gameplay: 7/10 (Just plain poker, pure and simple)

Graphics: 8/10 (Detailed and Textured, pretty good facial emotions too)

Multiplayer: 9/10 (Some of the best features around in any game, just plain fun)

Overall: If you like/enjoy/poker (like me) this could be the game for you, A great game overall. Very under-rated by most people, this truly is a diamond in the rough

7.5/10

Far Cry Instincts Predator Review

Far Cry review by Volsky

FAR CRY INSTINCTS PREDATOR

This was one of the first games I had bought for my Xbox 360 and I must say I don’t regret buying it. The game is basically a remake of the PC version, with the obvious upgrade in graphics.

At the start of the game you find yourself adrift near a tropical island, being fired upon by surrounding helicopters, you only just manage to jump overboard before your boat explodes. It’s then that you take control of Jack Carver and attempt to escape to safety of the island. Or so you think..

The Controls in this game are easy to pick up and to prevent you from becoming confused there is an inbuilt tutorial that pops up every so often. Although this can become annoying it helps you come to grips with the game. A nice little feature in this game is the radar, which you can see in the image below, which is situated just above your health and amour. It indicates where enemies can be found and whether they are wary of your presence, yellow indicates that they are unaware, red indicates that they are alerted and finally blue indicates where your current objective is.

One major problem in this game is the fact that the maps/levels are enormous. It is not that easy to get lost seem as you have to follow paths throughout the majority of the game, but it seems to take hours to get from one point to another. A slight exaggeration, but it is time consuming nonetheless. Another feature which is fun is being able to drive/mount anything you see. I must say the handling of the cars & boats etc is pretty awful, but that doesn’t stop it from being fun.

Who would have thought being tested on by mad scientists would turn you into a wild killing beast. Not long into the game you unlock the ability to jump 20 meters and tear enemies to shreds with your claws, as fun as it is, it doesn’t last for ever. As it runs out you need to locate special plants which revive your adrenaline allowing you to start the mayhem all over again.

The multiplayer in the game has got quite a lot install for you, a vast selection of beautiful maps along with several game modes to go with it. Thanks to an update the controls feel a lot smoother making the online game play more enjoyable.

If you’re an achievement lover I am afraid to say this game is not one for the weak hearted, you’ll spend many a hours trying to unlock them all. Trust me.

Pros: SP is great fun, Simple Story line, Good MP.

Cons: Enemies can become dull and repetitive, maps are too big.

Ratings:

Graphics: 7/10 Although this game is quite old, the scenery and water effects are still a sight for the eyes.

Gameplay: 6/10

Sound: 7/10 At times you actually feel like your in a rainforest, gun sounds are good enough for casual gamers.

Replay: 3/10 Even though the game its self is not that hard, levels can drag on as maps are too big.

OVERALL (not an average) 6/10 This game is actually quite good if you give it the time and energy.

Don’t rape me for this review, I tried and failed. Sorry if it is a bit incomplete, my head was buzzing with things to say and I just didn’t know that to write.
