Ah you remind me of what I used to listen to in high school until about my 2nd year of college.
To add to your list, you will like:
Seether - Disclaimer I, Disclaimer II, and Karma and Effect are better than their newest album imo
Linkin Park - Older stuff before A Minute Till Midnight. Check out Hybrid Theory specifically
Chevelle - Again older stuff is better, Wonder What's Next is excellent so is This Type of Thinking Could do us in
System of a Down - I like almost all their stuff. They imo are the best Nu Metal band I have ever heard.
You listen to Nu Metal(Disturbed) and a little Hard Rock(Shinedown).
I don't like the new Disturbed CD...I think they completely lost their element in it and just went pure mainstream. Their first two albums are good and the third was alright. They sucked live, one of my greatest disappointments.
Shinedown...I love Leave a Whisper.
Lacuna Coil - I've seen them live twice. First time they were awesome, second time they were okay. Seems to be a trend here that I like their older stuff as well.
Three Days Grace - They're a great Nu Metal band. Although they go against my trend in that I like all their albums. Seen them live three times, they put on an excellent show.
Trapt...I liked them for a while but I can't stand them anymore. I don't know what I was thinking. Catchy songs I guess. Maybe it killed me when I saw them live and the singer could sing worth a shit. Half the time his mouth would move but no sound would come out.

Morbid Angel is a classic Death Metal band. They're one of the fathers of the genre. You would not have a lot of Nu Metal and Hard Rock you have today without bands like them. I have not heard much of them, but one of these days I plan to explore them
Nu Metal is a stepping stone into the world of Metal. There are soooooooooo many metal bands out there it is simply crazy.
You can't expect to wake up one day and enjoy growling. It just doesn't work like that. However, growling adds an element of darkness to music that you cannot achieve anywhere else. If the lyrics are talking about undead spilling onto earth and destroying all that there is and the dude is clean singing...it just sounds stupid. Or perhaps they're talking about eaten alive...once again you can't clean sing that.
My progression went from Alternative, to Hard Rock, to Nu Metal, to Melodic Death Metal and Groove Metal, to where am I now...Death Metal and Black Metal and a bit of Brutal and Technical Metal.
If you want to hear some metal that's good for beginners, check out Lamb of God (Groove Metal and Metalcore) as well as In Flames (newest album is Experimental Metal older stuff is Melodic Death)
Hard Rock/Nu Metal is rather light music
One more thing, I used to hate growling and death metal with a passion...didn't understand how people could call it music. Never did I see myself blaring Nile (Brutal Egyptian Death Metal) as I drive down the street.

WoW i really don't know how you could call alter bridge metal. They are far far from it. Metal bands (in the sense of the word, Metal is used to describe alot of bands however i disagree with most) woul be bands like Metallica, Pantera, Killswitch Engage, etc.
Anyways my favs. are Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Veil of maya, and EveryTimeIDie.
Prob a little to heavy of a taste for most of you who are used to your "radio bands" like seether, breaking benjamin, etc. You will never hear any of my fav's on the radio.... EVER lol

Sorry for the double post but reading this reminded me of myself exactly!!!! I used to be the exact same way as you! I used to hate any kind of metal or death metal and couldn't understand how people could listen to it! Thats crazy. but as you can see above my fav bands are all Metal or some variant of Metal lol funny how that works huh! But i fucking love the shit now! it's great! Sounds really really good in a car with a system too!

Okay so most of their songs are just hard rock, but they have a few songs from the new album that are pretty heavy... which i would term metal.
and I never actually said they were metal... i said i'd term 'most' of their music metal, which i really meant to say 'some' ... sorry for the confusion.
Im no newbie to metal, most of my music taste IS metal... I just see metal qualities in some of Alter Bridges songs..

i do like the old stuff of linkin park and chevelle, and i dont mind listnin to seether and system of a down. and i agree that disturbed is going downhill for me, but i like the new song "the night". and trapt is alright but the problem i have with them is there songs sound so similar i cant listnin to them for long, but ill listin to a few of their songs once in a great while. and i wouldnt consider alter bridge metal, id hardly consider them hard rock.

i know what your saying, im a fan of hard rock, but i also like lighter versions of rock as well, thats basically a list of what im listnin to right now, but i was hoping of fans of hard rock, or any rock, would give me some good bands to listin too i hadnt heard before, but i should have titled this thread for any rock lovers, but when i think of rock i cant help but think of acdc and that crap, i cant stand it, and i do favor the heavier stuff more often then the lighter.
