Oh how I love Reggie..

Quote:
Waiting for the Miyamoto keynote to start, I’m sitting three rows from the front. Close enough to see Nintendo’s resident BMOC, Reggie Fils-Aime at the front of the crowd, working it with his trademark smile and good will. He poses for pictures, he signs Wiimotes, he presses the flesh with a goodnatured ease that would make even the most seasoned politician weep with envy.

“Kick his ass and take his name!” someone shouted from a few rows behind me.

“Who?” answered Reggie in mid-autograph.

“Phil Harrison, front row!” Sure enough, there was Phil Harrison, seated dead center, front row. Looks like he could show up on time for Nintendo’s keynote, but not Sony’s.

With a grin and a chuckle, Reggie replies, “Some would say we’ve already done that.”

Touchdown. The crowd goes wild.

Lol looks like everything sucked after that..

The enthusiasm dwindles as we’re kept waiting a full half hour. There’s running late, there’s fashionably late, and then there’s what we’re doing now.

We’re told this is going to be a “different kind of keynote.” As it turns out, he’s absolutely right. Most keynotes have a big bang, a juicy bit of info, or at least a really big technical snafu. Nintendo’s keynote had none of those things, just a charming man, his translator, and some pretty pictures.

The keynote said absolutely, positively nothing. It was an interesting insight into some of Nintendo's corporate vision, but it took entirely too long (it was supposed to be done at 11:30 and we got out at 12:15) to say too little. Miyamoto basically discussed Nintendo's appeal to the other 90%, people like his wife, who traditionally don't play games. He emphasized his company's team-based approach, stressing a game or console's success was never because of one single person, but rather many groups of dedicated team members working in concert. He discussed Nintendo's willingness to take risk, to go out on a limb, to rethink what they "know." In other words, he told us things we've already been told on a dozen different occasions.

Of course, we already knew not to expect too much, but this was still a huge letdown. Miyamoto was, as always, endearing and loveable but his rambling, meandering recap of Nintendo's successes (the DS, Nintendogs, the Wiimote) and failures (the e-Reader) was really only of interest in a historical sense. Still, everyone clapped, cheered, and hooted approval when he was done, proving that he could get up there and read the phone book and still receive universal love and devotion from the crowd.

Yeah, by Nintendo's standards it was pretty boring. Only the Mario trailer was worth watching it for.
