My thoughts on the Wii and its future
I posted this on another Xbox message board and I thought i'd post it here to see what you guys think. It's more like an observation and a prediction, share your thoughts!
Many have gotten the Wii for 3 games: Wii Sports, Mario Party 8, and Twilight Princess. And you know what? Those games will last a long time, especially Mario Party which can be played over an over again with friends.
But there are also many who have looked ahead and seen the future of Wii with Super Smash Bros. BRAWL, Metroid Prime 3, and Super Mario Galaxy. And in another 2 years or so, i'm sure we'll see another Zelda, Mario, and Super Smash Brothers. Not to mention Mario Kart is coming in 2008.
If the Wii is "trash", then it is trash that will be beating the 360 and PS3 for the next 5 years. Even without the upgraded version that will have DVD/CD playback. BTW, the Wii is also getting more "Channels" in September. Nintendo will always be the innovator and bar-setting company, and they have been ever since NES.
Now, this is not to bash the 360 or PS3. I own the 360 as well as the Wii, and I would not want to be stuck playing Madden 08 on Wii...but I'd never play an RPG or adventure game on the 360 after seeing what the Wii is capable of. It seems that Nintendo is the only one who still remembers that graphics do not come before gameplay.
And just to clarify one last time, I LOVE my 360! And i'd really love to have a PS3 because I like the controller, but they just don't have the games I want nor will it run Madden at 60 frames. So BE CLEAR that this is not an attack on either one of those.

Yeah but, how do you know? What does the wii have in 2008 and beyond? All the big ones, Smash, Metroid, Mario are coming this holiday season. The wii doesn't have that much stuff left that's coming out anytime soon. Also, I bet soon people will start to tire of the graphics. I still believe that the wii sales will decline soon and let's not forget that the gamecube was selling really well in it's first year too and everyone wanted one. Is it going to beat the ps3 and xbox 360? Maybe. But I don't think the wii has the horses to last very long.

there's PLENTY of good stuff coming for the wii.
i don't know why people dont think there will be good titles out on the wii in the coming years. it's a simple formula. if a console sells in huge numbers, game makers want as many games as possible on said platform.
the big developers aren't waiting to see what happens any more. they're making wii games now!
and madden 07 on wii was easily one of the best launch titles. the graphics weren't that bad, and graphics don't really have a whole lot of impact on sports games imo. madden 08 will be online too!

NES and SNES owns everything.
The Wii is alright, nothing special.

Well you see, the wii doesn't have much third-party support and you know a console is not gonna last a long time if there are no third-party support. Well for madden and other sports games, they are gonna be better on 360 and ps3 because the graphics will be sooo much better. Well maddden 07 on wii was decent, but the defense system sucked and well I guess it's a matter of opinion, would you like to play madden the old fashioned way with excellent graphics or have the same old-fashioned graphics expect you way it differently.

All are valid points.
The Wii has a few more things adding to their advantage other than the games coming this Fall/Winter.
-Virtual Console
This is HUGE. So many people have been dying to get back to the old days where gaming was much more simple and probably just as awesome as it is today. If Nintendo gets more third parties to give them rights to put games on VC, there will be no stopping Nintendo with titles such as 007 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.
-Wii uses Bluetooth
The possibilities for third parties to make bluetooth accessories for the Wii are endless. From headsets to keyboards to wireless speaker systems. You name it, and you'll probably see it on the market in 2008.
-It will always be the cheapest
This is appealing to parents looking for a Christmas gift. Kids under the age of 16 (who can't hold a job) make up a huge chunk of the gamers out there. The Wii will no doubt be selling for $150-200 by the end of 2008.
-Online support is on its way
We all know that Nintendo games are (most of the time) best played with a group of friends. Well, the fact is that your friends can't always come over (especially of you live with you parents) or maybe they are just really far away. Now you can play those fun multiplayer games on a whim, like Super Smash Brothers BRAWL which WILL have online support on launch. There have been rumors of a "Wii Chat" channel coming along with a headset of some kind. And did I mention it will be free?
-"Casual gamer" titles are becoming more popular
Gears of War, Rainbow Six, Metal Gear Solid, all these are great games...but to a new or casual gamer, they are terrible. We are beginning to find more and more people who just want to play video games to "simply have fun". Nintendo answers that demand with Mario Party, Wario Ware, VIRTUAL CONSOLE, Wii Sports, and so many others. And they are making more than just mini-game titles. Super Smash Bros. is a simple concept and fun with your friends battling it out in interactive stages.

Well you can't really say anything about the online for wii cuz it's freakin terrible. It's nothing compared to Xbox Live or even PSN. I agree casual games are attracting new people, but you know, let's not forget games like rock or guitar hero or even singstar. There are games like geometry wars, super stardust HD, calling all cars, or puzzle games that are also casual stuff. Also, "hardcore" gamers are the results of over 120 million ps1's, 100+ps2's (and still selling) and so we shouldn't really jump the gun and say that wii is gonna outsell ps3 or xbox 360 in the end. Hardcore gamers will find little interest in the wii outside of mario, smash, metroid, or zelda, and for the ps3/xbox 360 you get all types of games, not just casual and mario.

from the other thread about wii having the most games in production. there's a part in there about 3rd party developers making games for the wii.
konami, capcom, ubisoft, ea... just a few that are very much on board.
manhunt 2 and bully, both coming to the wii from rockstar who wouldn't have touched the cube. oh and table tennis.
there's gonna be plenty of "hardcore gamer" games. the wii's controller is perfect for shooters. nintendo has already said that there will be more "adult-themed" games for the wii. the old nintendo big wig that favored the kiddie image is out, and the new guy understands the "hardcore gamer" market.

They call him Reggie, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggie_Fils-Aime
His chief quote, "I'm all about kickin' a**". Which really, to me, is a bit disturbing. But still, promising for the future of Wii gaming.

Ok, I guess... but for Nintendo's E3 conference, they were focusing entirely on casual games so I thought they weren't trying hard in the hardcore game section. As for the most games being developed, we'll see. Nintendo isn't like Sony and Microsoft who approves games before they are being made so not every game can make it to their platforms (it's what I heard anyways), so a lot of the games might be just plain crap. But still, how many of those third party games are good? Is there a GTA or Final Fantasy? Gears of War? Metal Gear Solid? The big third party games still aren't coming for wii yet and well Nintendo doesn't really have really important third party games so far. This might change, I don't know, I'm not psychic, but I still don't see the wii outselling the ps2 and ps1 like Nintendo believes.
