Some stupid newbie questions
Ok, I've been playing Oblivion for a little bit now so I think I get the feel of the game but I have a couple of what are probably pretty dumb questions. Rather than a thread for each I figured I'd try putting them all here.
Does a horse give you any advantage other than moving a little faster? I was hoping it would help me carry more stuff but that doesn't seem the case. If it's jus the speed thing, I'd be half tempted to dump the horse and run so at least my athletics skill would get the occasional bump.
I've messed around a fair amount with alchemey and I've never seen a case there adding a 3rd ingrediant changes the effect of the potion. Is that just because my level is so low?
Also, when do I need to cast "on touch" spells to make them effective? To I have to be in contact with a baddie when I cast it, or do they have a certian duration? Will they still work if I'm using a weapon, or do I have to be in contact with bare hands?
The last thing may be more of a prefrence. I pick battle mage as class, so both blunt and blade are major skills. Am I better off switching between a bladed and blunt weapon to move both of those up (and maybe level faster?), or to pick one to specialize in?

So to answer your question,
Horses only give you speed boosts so sorry it can't carry stuff for you. But if you are over-encumbered, you can still ride a horse and it'll still move and stuff, but it can't jump.
You need to be either a journeyman or expert at alchemy in order to unlock the third effect I believe. Just keep mixing potions. Collect food or flowers whenever you pass by them so you can mix more and get better. It's profitable too so I never minded brewing potions. Made quite a fortune while I was training alchemy .
Touch spells aren't any more effective than range spells. The benefits of using them are that it costs less magic. You can cast spells when you are using a weapon and equipping a shield or torch. You can always cast spells when you are armed. You have to be right in front of your enemies or close to them for the touch spells to work
I think you should focus on weapons skills like only focus on swords or only focus on blunts. They are pretty much the same so it's more beneficial to have your blade skill be like 80 while your blunt is 10 and never use blunt, as opposed to having 50/50 for blunt and blade because you won't do as much damage. Personally I prefer using blades (one handed blades to be exact) because they are lighter and in my opinion are cooler. They also weigh less. It's your choice what you want to use.

That's not what I mean. What I'm saying is that there are spots for 4 ingredients in a potion. Let's say I combine two that have a propery of reduce endurance, and it will tell me that it will reduce endurance by 20 points for 20 seconds, or something like that. If I add a 3rd ingredient with the same affect, the results of the potion (20 points for 20 seconds) remains the same. Why doesn't the 3rd ingredient make a difference?

^ Oh, that's what you mean. Well sometimes adding a 3rd ingredient doesn't do anything cuz you aren't skilled enough to unlock the benefits of the third ingredient or it's just that the ingredient doesn't add another effect anyways. I'm an expert at alchemy and sometimes an extra ingredient doesn't do anything for my potion.

The shadowmeare horse(or whatever it's called) has a glitch where you can put your stuff in it, but idk anything else other than the speed advantage on the regular ones.
