You can get followers by completing guilds and some missions, you can then ask fighters guild members or whoever to follow you.
You don't join the arcane university but gain access to it through the mages guild.
The sword of the crusader is an alright weapon but I prefer the Honorblade of Chorral, its weightless if you don't complete its mission plus it will do damage to ghosts etc.
The guilds are all very different, in the fighters guild you do contracts for people in Cyrodiil, from hunting mountain lions to saving a damsel in distress. In the Dark brotherhood you are an assassin (great fun), in the mages guild you eventually get access to the Arcane University where you can enchant weapons and armor, in the Arena you fight your way through many enemies to face and defeat the Gray Prince and become Arena champion. In the theives guild you can steal on your own or do special jobs for the guild, completing the theives guid is definetly worth it. Its very easy to become sidetracked from the main quest on the guilds. Then you've also got
Depends on who you ask as to whether destruction magic is good, I rarely use magic so attacks for my character are weak. But if you level it up enough you may not need to carry a weapon.

You get the Honorblade from the quest Sins of the Father, which is the end of a small questline. Go to one of the inns in Chorrol, I think the Grey Mare, and talk to the Breton in the corner of the room to start the first one.

It's just an ebony sword that's weightless and can kill ghosts.
