What Level Were you When...
1.You were able to make it through Kavach and close the Oblivion gate without dying.
2. You were able to defeat the Green Orc with the hammer in the Arena (right before you advance to a Warrior).
3. You were able to kill a guard.

I did a lot of sidequests before the main story though. As for Lucien Lachance, I had already done the Dark Brotherhood stuff on another character, so when he came to me in my sleep I went along with his conversation and then when he turned invisible I cast detect life. Then I cast Hand of God. So far on the scoreboard thats Hand of God: 731 NPCs: 0.
By the way, when he dies you can loot the Black Hand hood and Black Hand robe from him. Its a good way to get those fast if you're not interested in actually doing the dark brotherhood quests.
