Fiddolbrfrho did a great job explaining it...It comes down to immersion and puzzles, that’s what sets it apart from the pack...I'm sure it's the same with Bioshock {I assume BS has puzzles}, which I haven't played yet, I'm waiting till after Mass Effect to get into it.
Mast Shake know expectations can kill any experience, but as Fiddolbrho said HL fans haven't complained.
Some people will say its to slow because they will get stuck at a puzzle, or don’t know where to go. Being a first time HL player it will take you a second to understand how the environment works; too know what to look for but you'll be good in due time.
It will be an experience you won’t forget.
Throw caution to the wind and go for it.
It's the highest rated game on Metacritic {of this generation}

bioshock is good, but not nearly as good as HL2... not very many puzzles and most of the story consists of radio and tape recorded messages. it's definitely worth playing, however.

The thing i found great was my companions. The part where the antlions help you out, i died a little inside every time one of them was killed.
