it's an ideal place to start. the only way you could start any earlier is to play HL1 on PC or ps2, but it's so dated it might not hold the interest of someone who didn't play it back in the day. in any case playing HL1 isn't going to impress the shit out of you the way HL2 will, so yeah, orange box is a great place to start. after episode 2 there is no more half-life until episode 3 is released.

btw i think they can fit all the games onto one disc because they all use the same engine. well, TF2 i'm not sure of, but to a large extent HL2, episodes 1 and 2 and portal all use the exact same engine.

i sold my gamecube and Gamecube games to get this and it is SO worth it! Portal is addicting and half-life is truely amazing in general, and TF2 is pretty good, do what you have to do to get it

I say go for it. There is no better place to start; don't worry about playing the original Half-Life their releasing a complete remake of it on the source engine {the HL2 engine, and I'm not talking about the HL:Source port} called Half-Life: Black Mesa.
Black Mesa (game mod) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Once that’s finished it should hold up well in today’s standards because the game is still great, just dated graphically, but the core elements are there, so what there going to do is update the graphics and add more enemy models. It should be legendary.

The only think you need to know about HL2 is that your Gordon Freeman a scientist that was there during the inception of the alien invasion. Your there to bring order.
