Arrow Square Enix Predicts Nintendo releasing a new console by 2011

Square CEO Predicts
New Nintendo Console by 2011 - Shacknews - PC Games, PlayStation, Xbox 360 and Wii video game news, previews and downloads

The only problem is that, about 1 year later Sony and MS will release their new consoles, and the Nintendo console will be the underdog in hardware once again, probably even more so with hardware improve very rapidly every year.
Quote:
Yoichi Wada, chief executive of Square Enix, now expects that Nintendo will release a new console in 2011.

In speaking with the Financial Times, Wada said that the console will likely be on par with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in terms of functionality, and may pack in a different controller than the Wii remote.

Though Wada thinks that motion controllers have become a standard, he's not convinced they will become key to console sales, in part because of how difficult it is to develop fun games for the peripherals.

"Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine," he said. "Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function."

By then the next Nintendo console might have a change of running a game with Gears of War graphics.

Ya, I was going to post this but never got around it.

On topic: I still don't see why they didn't make it HD to begin with.

Very simple, the system was able to deliver widescreen through 480P and the hardware was cheap enough that they could profit on it. They won't sell at a loss like Sony or MS do regularly. With weak 3rd part support from last generation and slow normal releases losing money on the console was probably seen as a non-option.

When the Wii was released, HDTVs wern't the norm like they are now.

You can plug a Wii into a CRT hand me down TV in a kids room, and that's exactly what people brought them for.

And to add to that, they saved a lot of cash by not making it HD. And to be perfectly honest, running component 480p looks fine on most HDTVs. The games on the Wii don't need awesome detail and crisp visuals and I often forget that it's not in HD anyway.

As for August's comment about serious gamers... Well Nintendo must be really kicking themselves about that one, considering they've sold more than the 360 and PS3 combined and made profit on hardware since day one.

EDIT: I read somewhere a few weeks back that less than 30% of gamers are playing in HD anyway. I'll see if I can find the article.

EDIT2: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...tion-editorial
Although I must have pulled the percentage from another article or out of my arse. But apparently less than half of GoW2 players on XBL are playing in HD, according to MS.

Who gives two shits about which console has sold better then the others, or when the console will be updated next, etc? I know I dont.

Just enjoy what you have for now! Otherwise you will constantly be chasing that 'next console'!

Who gives a shit about anything?!

I though it would be nice, to start a good topic, in a deserted forum. I probably won't buy that right away, I will wait for next Xbox and/or PS instead, since they most likely once again to be the ones to have a breakthrough.
