SONY SAYS DS IS A "GIMMICK"
Sony has raised its broadsword and performed the modern day equivalent of a battle cry before charging into the European handheld market.
Speaking to trade magazine MCV, Phil Harrison, Sony's VP of studios has dismissed the DS as a "gimmick", stating that "The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance; those formats don't appear in our planning. It's not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it's the truth."
As Nintendo fan boys across Europe gasp for breath and slowly count to ten, Harrison goes on to address the dual-screen handheld's unique hardware features when compared to the PSP: "With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen, [...] I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."

I have the PSP not the DS so I cannot disagree with SONY, now blatantly saying that to the media is another thing. The only advantage I see the DS having is a touch screen and stylus. Graphics, sound and game design I don't think can come close to PSP. You can do so much with the PSP that you cannot do with a DS. My mem stick has a movie for my son on long car rides, about 500 songs for him and my music, and all the game saves I have so far with plenty of room left over. I have digital pictures on it also.

PSP is just tryign to do everything, Nintendo are focused on GAMING! Not graphcis and music and like a whole pc, they want gaming.
So if Sony can't understand that, they kiss my ass.

The DS has a hell of a lot more games than the PSP. That's one thing it has going for it. I don't own either system either so I'm not being biased. I did have a PSP and sold it cause of not enough worth while games. I don't like the DS because of the stylus.

Yeah the DS does have a good amount of games, how many of those games I would play is few and far between but with the DS at least you have a choice. The PSP has crap for games right now.

I would feel pretty strange being that I'm a Junior in High School if I had the game Nintendogs and was walking around the school playing it. Most of my friends would jump me and the teachers would put me in a special-ed class. This is why I quit buying handheld games. I agree with Sony that the DS is a gimmick.

I would not go so far to say it is a gimmick, Nintendo just seems to be headed in a different direction with video games as a whole. From the grossly under powered Rev to the DS it just seems like they are trying to pave a new road with video games. Not a bad thing but if you want to make money you have to some extent cater to the masses who are going to be buying this stuff. Who knows I may eat my own wwords in a year or two, but right now, they are seriously behind the 8-ball.
