They still make te n-Gage? I remember when they thought that one would be tha ***t... I can't stand Nintendo's abstract design in the consoles (or the DS) nor their games. PSP--i don't game portably though.

There is no "best" handheld, at least unless you attach an area of superiority. For example, which has better specs, controls, build quality, battery life, games, will get you very different answers across the board.
Regardless my preference is the DS, which has an excellent selection of games. plenty of RGP, strategy, and action platformers. There's also the occasional oddballs I enjoy, like Pheonix Wright which is great if you're just killing time between classes in college. Trauma Center also deserves an overwhelming nod now that I think about it, surgery in an arcade beat the clock scenario = fucking A.
My only disappointment is no fighting games worth a shit on it, that and more power to do more homebrew with. Those are just minor quibbles IMO though, not to mention the touch screen allows completely different things completely.

PSP, especially with homebrew, and custom firmware.
Plus the ability to play PSX games on it? No fucking competition.
God of War, FFIIV Crisis core? Fucking AMAZING.

Game.COM is the best hand held ever!!!!
The PSP is by far the best hand held out there. But only if you have custom firmware on it.

This is why the PSP is the best hand held. Because of what you CAN do with it. The fact that you will never have to purchase a game for it makes this my choice.
