no way would oblivion go online, it would be to complicated and it is to big of map for live. if they did make oblivion online they would online allow the people to only walk around in the most populated citys on the map

Going full online, as in an MMO would completely change the game to something that isn't Elder Scrolls. One of the key aspects of it is character interaction, but if some idiot kills off all the NPCs, then WTF are you gonna do? Elder Scrolls universe responds to the player where an MMO can't do that because it has to be equal and fair to everyone. There is also very minimal character protection in ES, so pros could completely pwn noobs constantly with no repercussions, and if there were consequences, that would ruin the game as well.
However, privately hosted servers would be great in my opinion. Hosting your own "realm" only letting your chosen friends in would be pretty awesome, especially if you could import your characters to friend's games. Of coarse you would have to operate from the hosts save game, where ever in the game's storyline that may be. The best thing to do would probably be to have a save game profile with all of your friends together to play on when you can, and other individual profiles on their own, because it wouldn't be to fun if everyone were different levels and at different points.
Dude, that's awesome what I just came up with there. SOMEONE AT BETHESDA PLEASE READ THIS!!!

I dont know if an MMO is the direction they should be going, rather I think they should make a game where friends have the opportunity to play with each other online. If they made quests in the game that could be done solo, but then had instances where you would need more than one player to complete. Something like allowing up to 10 players to be in the same world simultaneously. I feel that this could make it so the deep RPG experience that Elder Scrolls provides but make it so players could chose who they play with to avoid the idiots that infest MMOs. Something like this would give the game the player-to-player online interaction that makes online games so great but could still keep the Elder Scrolls spirit.
But if they do an Elder Scrolls MMO but with the detail and quality of Oblivion I think it could revolutionize the MMO market, bringing a very large fan base to the console based MMO. Age of Conan will start the trend slightly, then Elder Scrolls could come in and dominate the market. To be honest I am looking forward to see what direction they go with this....cant wait for more info.

They wont go for an MMO thats for sure,
If they do i reckon it wouldnt be a Elder scrolls, or at least wont be on 360.
I think there is more chance that they make a Two Worlds type of online roleplayer, but deffinately not a full blown MMO.

I agree, however I don't get why so many people go 'crying to mammy', if they make it online SO WHAT don't buy it! Fanboys be damned, your' opinions are based on old MMO's, for all you know it could revolutionize the way we see them, it only takes one game! My god people calm down. Freedom of speech be damned also (that's right i'm placing myself on a surrealist ramble )
Also how are they going to make it work online? It barely works offline lol, all the crash errors and such!

Definitely the path I think they should go too, Elder Scrolls is the style of Two Worlds could make for some intense gameplay along with the great depth and story telling that Elder Scrolls always provides
