I am not an "explorer" type player. I don't care about finding the coolest mountain with the nicest views. I'm also not a "socializer," which is not to say that after a few hours of playing with flat NPCs I don't begin to feel a little alone in the world. I'm also not really an "achiever." I want to level up and get nice stuff, sure, but if the process that leads to that end is not fun (I don't want to grind), it's not going to appeal to me. I'm also not a "killer." Destroying people is fun but it's not a requirement.
Basically, what I really want is an immersive storyline.
Now, here are my opinions on some games I've played:
Fable - This is probably my all-time favorite RPG, unfortunately it was kind of short. Hopefully Fable 2 will make up for that.
Morrowind - This seemed like a great game at first but there was way too much reading involved (granted, it was optional), too much running around, the characters were way flat and one-sided (making me feel kind of alone in the world) and the combat was the pinnacle of awful.
EverQuest 2 - This game was really, really good up until about level 15. After that it became grind city and I lost total interest. Plus, what's the deal with that pack of 5 enemies standing 10 feet away doing nothing? And why can't they see me?
World of Warcraft - Cartoony graphics, really bad storyline, grind city.
Blue Dragon - I don't know what that was but it wasn't for me.
Zelda, Ocarina of Time (N64) - Despite the kiddy feel, I actually didn't hate this game. I did think the world felt really, really empty though.
Diablo - Great storyline, fun to play, especially with other people, but running to the surface to sell my gear all the time and then having to fight my way back through all the little demons I'd just killed to get back to the place I just came from was really lame.
Baldur's Gate - Very similar to Diablo. That chick at the bar really had some nice knockers too. My girlfriend was offended.
Might & Magic (Genesis) - I have no idea why I invested the time to beat this game. It was pretty awful but leveling up the party you created from scratch was really pretty fun.
Wizardry (SNES) - Same as Might & Magic but the endless maze of dungeon got a little old. Especially, getting lost in it.
Dragon Warrior IV (NES) - At the time I really enjoyed this game.
ShadowGate (NES) - I don't know even what to say about this game. It was bad. It was like a MUD with pictures. I don't know how to explain it.
Any and all MUDs - Puke. I need some graphics, sorry.
