Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

WoW was the first mmo that I ever played, after playing it for some time and having it consume what I thought was too much of my free time I decided to quit. The laptop that I have at the moment cannot support the new Warhammer mmo coming out so I decided that my mmo career was over unless one released on the 360.

While this is not new news, Funcom has previously announced that they will make a version on their Age of Conan mmo in the 360. Personally I am a bit skeptical about an mmo on a console but don't think that Funcom would put in the time or that Microsoft would agree to it if the game was not going to be good. They have already said that the console version will most likely release about 12 months after the PC version which comes out in May (the 20th i believe). This extra time is what they gave themselves in order to change the game to make it console friendly, MTV Multiplayer on Xbox 360, But Controller Remains Biggest Obstacle , small article about the game for little more info.

The game looks good for the computer so I did some more research, but because they havent yet put all their effort into the 360 version most sites only talk about the PC version of the game. So began to think about the game and make my own assumptions about what they will do with the game, yet some things I'm not sure about.

First off, they have said that they will be modifying the UI for the console, I have planned on buying a mouse and keyboard for the 360 if I played this game, not really sure how an mmo would play with a controller. Do you think it will be keyboard/mouse compatible or that they will change it to make it controller only? I dont see why they would make it controller only but they again you never know.

And second, do you think Funcom will allow console players to be on the same servers as PC players? And if they do allow them to be on the same servers do you think people will be able to play characters from their PC accounts on the 360? My thinking on this is that they will allow players on PCs and consoles to mix because I honestly dont believe that enough 360 players will buy the game to give a high enough population.

And finally, will you consider buying the game. I like mmos but for some reason the thought of one being on a console is a bit weird. I always knew this was coming and that the mmo market was just to large for the consoles to not recognize, but still am hesitant about this game. I realize that it will be some time before we will have enough info on the game to make a decision, but as it is right know, knowing what the PC version is going to bring, would you play this game on the 360?

haha, the lack of comments on this thread shows that not many people seem interested in this game. Maybe more will be once it gets closer to release date (over a year away). Hopefully Funcom knows what they are doing, this could be a very big flop if they dont do it right. I probably wont even play it and I consider myself an MMO fan, I honestly think that the idea of paying more money on top of the fee for xbox live will be the death of this game. The console generation are just not comfortable with the idea quite yet. If anything it will get more companies working on the genre to hopefully spawn a popular game in the future. Just look at the computer mmo community after WOW...all it takes in one game to redefine a genre.

I watched a few videos of it earlier and although it does look beautiful, I am a bit skeptical about it. It is hard because you want to pick a game that is going to be out for a while and have millions of users, so all the time invested isn't wasted on the day the servers shut down for good. I might snag it to try it out, after the reviews of course. (PC)

<- in closed beta. Yes pc and xbox players will be able to be on the same servers. suckiest part is the fact that they wont be releasing the xbox version until after the pc version.

think im gonna go play it some now though ^^

Have you seen gameplay on the Beta servers? It looks pretty sweet. Check it out on youtube. I am to lazy to post the links.

Well,
I never really cared about this game, I thought it would just be a joke..
Better at least go checkout youtube to see if it's decent.

PC atm ye, but they anounced ages ago they will release a version on the xbox too, apparently in around a years time.

If done well this might be able to work but its going to take serious amounts of work on funcoms side to make it worth while.

i.e. to attack on this game there is 5 different swings(left right, forwards, lower left and lower right). Now to convert this alone to a controller is hard, there are two choices I see, neither being great

1. use a standard button in combination with analog stick, this would limit you movement while attacking though.

2. use a diffeent button for each attack, since the xbox controller only has 8 normally used buttons, imediatly using 5 of these for a normal attack is a tad crazy.

If they allow the xbox version to use mouse/keyboard though then this game will work just fine as people will use it just like the PC version.

as for if they will allow xbox and PC users to play together it all depend how good a conversion they do. If they dont do it well xbox players would be at too much of a disadvantage and that it would be pointless mixing. I imagine they will do a mix, some realms PC only, some both and some xbox only.

The game itself looks great fun getting it myself in 10 days time after my exams ( for PC of course)
Here is a little taster:
LivePvP - Massive Fight - Make Digital History - Lineage 2, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, Warhammer: Online, EVE Online, Tabula Rasa, and more!

EDIT: just thought they could just use the digi pad for the attacks, dont know why I didnt think of this above

been playing this for a couple of days, and wow, its pretty crap.
its no wow by any means.
The combat feels really unnatural, the game need a pretty decent pc,
the gfx are nasty, the idea that you can attack urself rather than spam a button to cast spells etc is false.

Im yet to try pvp, and havent discovered that much yet, but its almost a spitting image of Archlord, another failed mmo

are you kidding me?>!?!?!

Ive played AoC since mid way through open beta and was early enough to get into the early access group before release so have been playing for a few months now.

The pc version is still nowwhere near what I would call at a good release version...... steadily getting better? Yes. But now they are going to take resources away from fixing all the crap that's still missing and stuff thats in game but so utterly craptacular and in dire need of a fix....... and work on making the game console friendly?

So now they'll have 2 target audiences with mediocre results?

FFS!!

If thats not the worst tell-tale sign of trying to make a buck I dont know what is.

For all you consolers out there..... IF they do try to push this crap out DO NOT buy it. Make them publish a demo that includes access to the full game (not just the single player instance that you start the game in). The open single player instance and the starting "newb" city is tight..... if the whole game were like these 2 areas it would be very good for an initial release client. But as soon as you leave the starting city thats where things start down hill.

What a load of crap.... I have been trying to give these guys a chance and work through issues but seeing this just takes the cake. They need to be focusing on getting the game right to begin with........ then when they have a game that everyone cant get enough of... THEN focus on pushing it out to other platforms.

Games only been out a few weeks and already A LOT of people are putting this game on the shelf for a few months and see how it improves. Some of my long term guild members who have been in many games together have dropped it altogether saying that it's not even worth their time. Im really darn close to doing the same thing...... No tolerance in paying someone to beta test their program anymore.

If companies were smart... their open betas would be just that..... FULL open. Make the game Free for the first 1-2 months work out most of the critical issues every MMO seems to have when they start..... then shut the servers down for a month to do the fixes...... then full blown release. All this stupid headstart and limited open beta crap is just a marketing scam to pull people in.

Im not a long term console person but Ive had it long enough to witness the release of some pretty damn good games.... Assassin's Creed, Forza 2, Orange Box, CoD4..... In my mind console game companies do a much better job releasing a final product than PC MMO companies and even PC RPG companies do. Yes the console games sometimes have issues but they are usually pretty tight come the first few weeks after release.

I think the PC MMO problem is mainly due to the fact that so many people feed into the monster....... if the gaming community would just stop and say "this is unacceptable and im no longer going to pay for this crap" things would change really fast.

Come to think about it..... why dont any of the gaming review articles or mags ask the tough questions like "Are you guys going to release an unfinished product and let the following 6 months flesh out your beta testing like every other MMO has done over the past 10 years?" "What are you doing differently to ensure when your product is released you have a game that is 90% done?"
