Your RPG Style
Okay, so I am very curious to know what everyone's style of playing RPG games is. I myself am always playing through and leveling up my characters at every chance I get, sometimes more than needed, and always looking for all sorts of stuff (side quests, legendary items, etc.) My friend on the other hand, well lets just say he plays through the game and finds it difficult because he always runs away during battles and hates random encounters. My question for you guys is, do you go out of your way to level up in advance or just run around in circles getting in fights in between the storyline or are you the more carefree take the levels as they come?

It really depends, Lost Odyssey, I am yes.
Mass Effect, I didn't , just didn't have the urge too.
I'm a big RPG fan, I play alot of MMO's , and I usually will spend an extra day or so making sure I am a level or two above the quest. I am definitely the type to do all the extra quests, and get the special gear, when I play a game I enjoy.

It all depends on how I am feeling that day. Some days I just spend all day doing side missions and getting armor and stuff. Other days I I do nothing but the main quest.

I like leveling up really early in the game to make it easier at the end.
It's really fun seeing a boss get killed with like 2-3 blows.

I enjoy doing that too, but sometimes it almost takes the whole challenge out of the game.

EverQuest II- When I used to play this game I'd level up my crafting to a point where I could create or sell products to afford the best armor and weapons before I went out to adventure. Usually my crafting was 5-10 levels above my adventuring, so that by the time I went out to take on adventures at one level, I was usually already wearing the max armor and carrying one of the better weapons. My goal was never to die and to be as prepped as possible for any adventuring. I had pretty well managed to do that a few times up until like level 30. Then I started doing PvP and I gave up the goal of not dying prettying damn quick.
Morrowind/Oblivion- I was mostly concerned with getting coin and pimping out my stats/equipment before adventuring, same as EQ2.
Mass Effect- I try to do all available side missions and explore everything in a given place before I move on, because I want to finish all the missions, get the most XP, the most credits, and see everything a place has to offer before moving on. I have a feeling I'll blow the entire game pretty quickly on my second run through though.
Fable- I did everything I could in each city/town before moving on to the next mission. Not really because I wanted to build up my character but because the game was so fun that I wanted to get the whole story. I will say though that I was never able to find all of that old man's birds at the Heroes Guild when I was a kid. I killed like 10 of them and he's still like "There's still more of them!" And I'm like "WTF?! Where?! Fine, you find them then 'cause I'm done with this crap."
Ocarina of Time- I concerned myself primarily with main missions and didn't do any side missions unless they were pretty valuable (I really only remember helping some lady gather up her chickens... I think it was to get a container heart but I can't remember, it was forever ago).
Diablo- My goal was to get through as many levels as I could with as much junk to sell as I could before having to go back up to the surface. I don't really remember any side missions in Diablo though. I just remember killing lots of stuff and collecting whatever they left behind.
Baldur's Gate- Same deal as Diablo. Basically dealt with no side missions.
Might & Magic for Genesis- Get gold, train, get gold, train, get gold, train.

what i'd do is try and complete the storyline, however. If there is a fun quest or it has good rewards i will take it. And i never run away from random encounters, except sometimes from Golden Sun on GBA. On oblivion and most RPGs, i prefer to get armor rather than weapons.
