Gran Turismo Series Sells Fifty Million Copies news from 1UP.com

Quote:
A lot of people sure like sexy cars. In fact, enough to sell over fifty million games to be exact, according to a recent Sony press release.

A series that featured groundbreaking graphics when it hit the Playstation just over ten years ago, Gran Turismo has been a flagship title through each of the console's successive iterations, with every entry surpassing a million sold.

"Initially, Gran Turismo was an 'alternative' racing game, kind of an outsider in the genre," said producer Kazunori Yamauchi. "And we made it thinking that it would be okay as long as it reached out to 'the select few who would agree with us.' So this figure -- 50 million units -- is simply astounding."

While the series is typically praised for its excellent graphics and strong attention to detail, it has also met its share of criticism, with detractors pointing to the lack of damage modeling and simplified driving mechanics as evidence of a lack of a realism. However, Yamauchi announced at a recent press event that future updates to GT5: Prologue will feature deformation damage modeling, saying that players can expect it to be implemented sometime in Fall 2008.

GT5: Prologue, the latest and first PlayStation 3 version of the Gran Turismo series, has sold more than 2 million units worldwide since its release in Japan in November 2007. The full version does not yet have a release date, but Yamauchi has stated it might not be released until at least summer 2009.
Pretty damn impressive. It's half of the what the Sims series did I believe.
