TBGixxer's Tiger Woods 2009 review
I've been a fan of the Tiger Woods games for years now. This year provides 5 more courses as well as tons more game modes. Read on...
Swing mechanics
I put this one first because the swing mechanics are awesome. Much more realistic than Tiger 08'. When you draw back your swing, so does your character. The amount of backswing and the speed of your down swing both play a role in how hard you hit the ball. You get used to the feel for each club type (driver, wood, iron, putter, etc). You also have to swing harder to compensate when in a sand trap or caught in the rough. Twist the wii remote left or right for a draw/fade just like you would a club in real life. The swinging feels great and is definitely worth forfeiting graphics for if you have to choose which console to buy the game for.
Side note: The swing mechanics for Tiger Woods 2010 will probably be even greater since the Wii motion plus will be available.
Game modes
The My Career mode is deep. You can create your character using the very detailed character creation tool that Tiger has used for a few years now. You can also totally customize your swing (from how you bend your knees and wrists to how much you twist and bend at the elbows at each phase of the swing). Customizable clubs is new this year, you take a series of shots and the new coach feature recommends club adjustments that you should make. You can play a PGA tour season and bring your character up and through to the FedEx cup or you can jump directly to the cup. There is also a challenge mode where you play through a series of golfers to play the main challenge against Tiger himself. There are several game modes like Target to Target, T-I-G-E-R, stroke play, and many many others. Party mode gives you tons more arcade-style games designed for up to 4 players and is a blast when you have friends over.
Graphics
It's on the Wii.
Replay value
This game has a good replay value. They did a great job making sure that all the game modes can help improve your golfers skills as well as earn you money for upgraded gear and equipment. You will spend a good amount of time in this game beefing up your characters skills to have a better chance at some of the better pros. The tons of game modes and party play add a ton of replay value as well.
Overall:
8.5/10
(I would give the 360 and PS3 versions an 8/10 for the improved graphics but lack of motion control)
