I think Mike covered this before. It is database optimization that is on a daily ticker as opposed to being on a weekly one that would take much longer.

As I've said before, the backup script has to lock the database while it runs... and the xbox db is huge. We have to have a daily backup so we can recover from the odd catastrophe (like when those dorks who got on the mod account and made a big mess)

That said, we have (just now) made a couple changes just now that might help. For 1, we added a cache of all posts so threads (in theory) should load significantly faster. 2nd we've moved the DB backup from midnight (est) to 3am (est).

That caching of the threads probably doubled the db size so the backup may take a few minutes longer, but hopefully moving it back 3 hours will put it in a less busy time.

We'll see how it goes.
