Is Microsoft 360 WIFI/proprietary?
Do I have to use Microsoft's WIFI adapter for the 360, or can I choose another brand like? Microsoft's WIFI = $99.99, Linksys WIFI = $14.99

You could always buy it and if it doesn't work return it. I don't see why it wouldn't work though. I don't think there is any way for the 360 to tell what type of adapter is attached.

don't waste your money, it doesn't work. the xbox 360 doesn't have any drivers for any other wifi adapter
(i completely just made that last sentence up but it sounds good haha)
but seriously, it really doesn't work, i tried for about 2 hours

Tstorm might have made it up, but he's right!
Different brand Wifi adapters have different drivers to run them. That's what's on the CD that comes with the adapter.
That being said, theoretically if a PC adapter is made with the same chip as the MS one, then it might work. But all you can do is search and see if others have tried it.

-"Hello, Microsoft Heldesk, Bish speaking. Have you tried restarting your computer?"
-"Hello. No... Lemme try...... Nope, didn't fix it"
-"Ok, the only solution left is to headbutt it as hard as you can repeatedly"
-"Hold on............ Aaah, that fixed it, thanks!"

If you want to save a few bux, you can pickup a wifi/ethernet bridge or a linksys(or other brand), wifi gaming adapter.. they get programmed at a PC and then connect to your 360 via ethernet...

Yea what JBenn said.
usb adapters don't work unless you are lucky and it happens to work, or you can find a way to install drivers on the 360.
I use a ethernet wireless bridge, it works great. mine is by Trendnet.
As another option you could try powerline ethernet, but i heard its really unstable and not worth it.
