Question about using the 360 wireless controller on the PC

I don't have a corded controller, only a wireless one, and I don't have wireless receiver for it. Is it possible to use the controller by plugging the charging cable into the computer? By this I mean, I bought a rechargeable battery for my wireless controller and it came with a cord. One end plugs into my controller and the other plugs into a usb port. Can I use this cord as a substitute for the wireless adapter or am I pretty much just stuck with having to buy the adapter?

EDIT: No, you can only charge it through your PC.

Even when plugged in to your 360 and charging, the wireless controllers are still wireless. The charge cable does not take over for the controls, it's only for power. This being the case, obviously you will need the adapter.
