CAT5 v CAT5e
Hi guys
quick but weird question. Does it matter wether I use a CAT5 or CAT5e patch/ethernet cable to connect my Xbox to my modem?
I know CAT5e allows better speeds, but will this make a difference on Xbox Live?
Cheers

No, it does not matter. The 360 only has a 100megabit per second network jack on it. Cat5 is rated to fully support 100megabits per second. 5e provides gigabit speeds over copper...but you have to have a gigabit NIC to take advantage of it.

Sorry. Lag is caused by latency. Latency will be from your internet provider to the central server where both players are logged in. The speed from your 360 to your modem is not where any issues are. And again, unless you have a gigabit NIC in the 360...Cat 5e provides no benefit whatsoever.

Absolutely positively will not see a difference. Think about it for a few seconds. Do you think the 5-40 feet of network cable in your home is going to really have an impact when you are playing against multiple players from all other the world???? The packets are traveling thousands of miles....

Well, I'm a network and server administrator for a living. So, this is really my area of expertise.
That also makes me kinda a technology nut...and I have a bit of obsessive compulsiveness...so I tend to learn about everything that really interests me. So, most electronics things are in the realm of stuff that I really pay attention to.

From what I understand I think Cat5 has pretty much been replaced with Cat5e these days anyway. Many described as Cat5 will be Cat5e.
But yea pparks has described everythign you need to know :P

CAT 6 is best but with X-360 limited to 100Mb CAT 5 (any) is fine.
