I've still got my original that came with the console, no problems. I'd say just go with the basic wired MS one. My only complaint is the newer versions have the mute switch in the line, rather than at the plug where you can easily switch it on and off while playing.
Be wary of 3rd party headsets. Many of them sound crappy, have a bunch of noise, etcetera.

Ditto that.
Wireless one has superior sound quality and lasts longer.

I would have to agree to go with the wireless one, you hear a lot better with it even when your friend mumbles in the mic. Try looking on ebay they might sell their headset that came with the console if you want cheap, also the stores are selling the standard headset for some money don't know how much but its not a lot i think.

I really don't think the $50 wireless headset was what the OP meant by "cheapest".
Besides, who wants one more thing to recharge? I really don't mind having a wire go from my hands to my head, the two are never that far apart.
And the wireless is the MS one. They both are. Come on.

True, the third party ones arent as good(quality) or reliable. Go with the offical shit. Some argue that wired breaks easily, others argue wireless has more connection problems. Just go with what you think you'll need. If you play ALOT, get wireless, since wired is bound to break eventually. If you are a casual gamer, like me, get wired and youll be fine. Hell, a bunch of games you dont even need to talk or hear what people are saying, unless you are with friends. Half the conversation on xbox live includes Gay or Douchebag anyways.

Personally, I just use that standard wired headset with the mute switch at the connection. I also find that the standard headset with the mute switch at the connection has superior sound quality compared to the one with the volume control spliced into the wire
