Dead DVD drive?

Hi

I am a little stuck and am hoping somebody on this forum can shed some light on my situation.

I recently repaired the RRoD on my cousin's console, after having done this a few times before. I upgraded the GPU heatsink and installed Whisper Max fans. When finished, I started the console for playtesting. Plugged in my HDD and played BF1943 for a few hours with no problems at all.

After this I tried to open the DVD drive to test that it was working (don't ask me why I didn't do this earlier, kind of got sucked into a big BF sesh) and nothing happened, except the light in the middle of the ring of light flashed once briefly.

I tried changing the SATA cable with my own working one but that didn't work. I then tried swapping out the power cable and that didn't work. I then tried swapping the DVD drive with my own working one (both Hitachis), after swapping out the PCBs and that didn't work either - same problem.

So, the problem lies either with the PCB in the drive, or with the mainboard, possibly the switch (though I doubt it).

Has anybody else had this problem? Any suggestions? I do have a spare Benq drive from a broken elite console, which maybe I could flash / spoof but I don't really want to go down that road.

Is the drive catching somewhere?

Ok answer these please and be short:

1) what is not working about the drive

2) Explain what the drive does when you put a disk in or when you try.

1. What's happening now is that the light in the middle of the ring of light is constantly flashing when I power up. On the dashboard the drive is constantly trying to open (says "opening...")

2. I actually haven't tried putting a disk in, because the tray won't open. It isn't that it's just stuck, it isn't even trying to open. I guess that I could disassemble the drive again and insert a disk that way to see what happens, but I suspect that nothing will happen!

Any ideas?
