Xbox 360 performance and Left 4 Dead 2 info

I did a bit of reading before I posted so now I guess I need to verify what I read..

Here's what I am doing...I have a friend that is a big L4D fan, he has been on me FOREVER to get the game. The issue is my laptop is for work and really isn't going to run L4D2 in any playable sense and building a PC is a bit out of my wants and needs at the moment.

It appears that all the hardware versions of the 360 the big difference is Wireless, HD, memory (with older models) and HDMI.

I want the cheapest way to play online with my friend. Do I need a HD? The HS just speeds up the loading of the game correct? Can I pick one up at a Pawn Shop or Game Stop, just the cheap one with a wired controller and get the same playability? Am I going to be able to connect with him if he is playing on a PC? Do I just need a live account and I am golden?

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

I don't believe L4D2 will have cross-platform capabilities, which is stupid on Microsoft and Valve's part, so it won't work (unles I'm wrong).

I don't know if you can even buy wired controllers anymore but in order to connect to XBL you must have a memory device: memory card or HD. You will also need a Gold Membership to XBL,which costs $60 per year, in order to play with others.

I wouldn't advise buying from a pawn shop as the 360's might have something wrong with them or could be old versions which are prone to breaking. I've never purchased a refurbished 360 from gamestop but they probably know their stuff and thoroughly check to make the xbox will work.

Buy a brand new arcade and it will have the best chipset of all the xbox's to date with the 512 memory onboard. L4D 2 makes no mention of cross platform gaming on its wiki page. But Team Fortress Two was Cross play and Valve would be the best if they did that.
