500 line horizontal resolution is rubbish. That is standard def. You do NOT want standard def in a projector since the screen is so large.
Data projectors can be really good for gaming, if they have a resolution of at least 1280x720 or 1280x1024. And just make sure they have a refresh (or response) time of 8 milliseconds or less.
Then you have to worry about globes. This is where it gets expensive. Most globes will last between 800 and 1500 hours of use and then you gotta buy a new one. With most brands the globe is half the cost of a new projector!

Not exactly. It will support an HDTV input, it does project images at an apect ratio of 16x9. But it does not project an HDTV image.
The resolution output is: 854 x 480 (16:9). The 480 is the key number here. HDTV broadcats (and the Xbox360) is 720P or 1080i. 480p is the same as a progressive scan DVD and is NOT HD.
My personal opinion, projects are still pretty costly. I wouldn't suggest doing anything less than $2500 at this time. And you will be putting in a $500 bulb every 1,500-2,000 hours. So, projectors are still costly.

Yes, I clicked the link. And it can accept an HDTV input, either 720p or 1080i. But what it can accept as an input, doesn't have a single thing to do with how it's going to output. It's the resolution of the projector that determines the output format. And this projector doesn't do HD. It does WVGA
If you click the link on the page for the specs,
http://www.projectorcentral.com/InFo...nPlay_4805.htm
It shows you the following native resolution:
Native: 854x480 Pixels
If you look at the product spec sheet, and look at the display section you will find the same information
http://www.projectorcentral.com/pdf/..._spec_2362.pdf
I've spent a good deal of time with projectors and home theater equipment and you have to look closely at the specs. They can (and will) say a lot in the description, but the specs are the specs and they tell the whole story.

If you look very closely at the specs of the Sharp projector from the Best Buy website link above, it says exactly what I am explaining....
Quote:
|
Supports HDTV and DTV signals, including 480i, 480p, 540p, 576p, 720p, 1035i and 1080i
|
Notice how they say it supports the HDTV and DTV "SIGNALS".
Further down;
Quote:
Maximum Resolution 854 x 480
Vertical Scanning Lines (Native Mode) 480
|
So, it does a max resolution of 480 lines. This is the resolution of a DVD. HD signals are either 720p, 1080i or 1080p. But this projector has a MAX of 480. Thus, not HD.
So, both projectors discussed can take an HD feed (at either 720p, or 1080i) and then can downscale it to 480p and then display it. So, yes you can hook it to a HD cable box and see your HD channels, but not at a true HD resolution.
Hopefully that makes sense. You gotta be careful with this stuff, they speak very tricky. With anything, if the price is less expensive there is a reason. Look closely at the specs. This is NOT to say that it won't still look good...but I certainly wouldn't want to spend over $1k on a projector that doesn't do HD...but seems to depending upon what part of the description you are reading.

No problem, like I say these products mislead on purpose. It's just great to have forums where people can discuss them and get the facts straight before somebody ends up with something different then they expected.
