Just to clear things up, the Gamerscore has nothing to do with Microsoft Points.
The Gamerscore are points you earn from beating specific tasks in games. Retail games get 1000 gamerscore points, while the Xbox Live Arcade games get more like 300 gamerscore points. Points are used to see how 'good' you are at a game, but really represent how much time or how dedicated you are at a game.
Gamerscore and Microsoft Points are completely unrelated at this point.
Microsoft Points allow you to buy things on the Xbox Live Marketplace, such as the Arcade games, pictures(what's the point?!?), gamer icons, and themes. Personally I don't understand the point of spending these points on any things but games. You can get these by buying them at a retailer, or buy them over your Xbox with your credit card.
Hope this clears things up.
