Disc Scratching
Hi, i recently bought an xbox 360 premium off of ebay and it came with 2 games, now the game i have played on most, 'Hitman blood money' after a few days of playing this game, i got the dreaded 'disc read error'. I looked on the back of the disc and it had many scratches, (i forgot to check what the disc looked liked before i played it) and assumed the previous owner had scratched it somehow, so i thought 'huh' must be the disc and bought a new version of the same game, now this game was also second hand and i checked it this time and it had one tiny scratch but looked spanking new overall. Another three weeks has passed and there are some slight white marks around the edge of the disc (not a full circle) 3 different small marks around the edge in separate places and a few regular scratches in random places, now i haven't moved the xbox at all, not once, and have took caution when handling the discs so does this mean i have a faulty xbox? If so i don't have the receipt, would that affect the warranty, apparently the console was bought in June 06' according to the previous owner and it was manufactured in March 06' (according to the xbox itself) so obviously it's not out of warranty even without the receipt because the xbox itself isn't a year old, what should i do, send this to Microsoft, is that possible without receipt? Should i even be considering it?
Replies and help will be welcomed :-)

if it isn't affecting your games then it doesn't matter and a couple of litttle scratches are fine

It WILL affect his gameplay eventually. Circular scratches are the worst kind, they will cause errors quickly. Maybe you should try changing the orientation of your system... and make sure it is absolutely 100% level.

Indeed it is level, on a perfectly flat wood surface laid in a horizontal position, should i be thinking this is a fault with the system?

I'm having the same problem. My Gears is getting a very consistent scratch ring in the center of the disk.
At first I had mine vertical but then laid it down after seeing what was happening. Haven't noticed it getting worse but I've been watching it.

Well, of course it is a system fault. You stick it in fine, and it comes out scratched, not hard to figure out where the fault lies. A few users on here, however, are able to tolerate this problem, and they say it is only present in certain games and that their games still load. Maybe one of them can chime in. If you have the ability to return it for a new system, I'd do that immediately. Otherwise, as long as only one game is affected, you have to weigh the choice of leaving it be, hoping the game will not suffer a fatal error at some point, and that your read head isn't going to start scratching other discs. Or, getting it serviced/replaced with a used system, and taking your chances on possible worse problems. Personally I'm waiting for the updated 360... I hope they fix these drive errors along with the updated CPU. But it seems like CPU/overheating problems far outweigh the drive issues, for most people.
Edit: Oops, I notice you bought it off ebay. That sucks. :| Video game consoles with a significant incidence of failure are not something you should buy on ebay. What was the seller's feedback rating?

How would they help me? From what i have heard they are foreigners who read off a piece of paper because they don't understand english properly, if my system is scratching discs then i should send it back or should i wait until the disc is unplayable? i have only 2 month of warranty left so i need to get something sorted out quickly.
