No, you just need a memory card. But without the HDD, you cant play backward compatable games like Halo 2.

Is that why you only can use 12GB of the 20GB hdd? 8GB is for loading and unloading the oldies?

I believe so, not onlt that but the HDD comes preloaded with all those stupid movie clips...
