it plays dvds out of the box (i noticed that the quality was better than with my standard dvd player...was cheap though lol).
it also plays mp4 files and wmv files from cds or from memory sticks.
and yes hd dvds via the external drive

game saves are very very small. i have around 12 games, some downloaded music, 3 large game demos, a few arcade games the ipod add on download, a few themes, all the xbox updates and i have around 9gb free.
the only reason to have larger than 20gb is if u plan on paying to download tons of add on packs for games, download every demo you can get your hands on, save all your music direct to the xbox etc...

Personally I would go for the premium, it's a little cheaper and you don't really need 120GB, unless you really like the black or think the HDMI is necessary.

Thanks to all for their time & help. I think I'll go for the premium w/HDMI, if I can find it.
One more thing... is there anything in particular I need to do or be aware of to help avoid the problems that have plagued the 360 so far & do I need to buy an extended warranty?
