The X clamp mod sounds like a lot when written out, but it's just a matter of wiping old paste off, squirting new paste on, and then sticking some washers and screws on the board. After you've taken apart your 360 and obtained the parts, it probably will only take 10 to 30 minutes (threading screws with washers isn't much of a time-consuming task).

The hardest part in my opinion is getting the stupid thing apart. You have to remove the faceplate, then pry out the two side panels by pushing on latches through the vent holes in the top and bottom, then use a flat small screwdriver to release all 7 latches on the back, then pry the back open, then unlatch the 4 clips on the front, then remove 6 screws, lift off the top plate, and finally remove the drive and fan shield. Then you have to unscrew the front panel board, remove it, unscrew the mainboard, and lift it out. That will definitely take you some time if it's your first time opening it (I can get mine apart fairly quickly, but when my friend first gave it to me, I stared at it forever trying to decide how to get it open).

You don't take the CPU or GPU chips off, just clean them with a q-tip or something.

It takes a lot to scratch the board (like a screwdriver). Touching the board will not harm it, and you most likely won't break anything if you handle it carefully. There's a good bit of space between the traces and the holes for the screws.

You sure the 360 itself is the problem? Have you tried powering it on from someone else's power brick? The thing is, Microsoft were really lazy in designing the power brick and sometimes it just runs out of enough juice to power the 360(maybe over a period of time and sometimes also while playing games). I also experienced the RRoD problem quite frequently but haven't had any hiccups whatsover since I started using a 450W ATX PSU to power mine. No fan mods, no Arctic Silver, nothing..and it plays like a charm (even 5/6 hrs continuously) and never heats up either. That's not to say no 360 heats up, many do...but you should still give the alternative power option a try and then see if the problem is solved. Cheers
