Backing up the hard drive

Well, 6 month into my Xbox360 experience I had my first unit die on me. This has me paranoid about losing the data on the hard drive. Is it possible to back up the Xbox's hard drive onto a USB hard drive so that I'll have my game data if the drive should crash?

You won't lose your data if your xbox crashes, the hard drive should be fine. If you're worried, buy yourself a memory card and periodically save your gamertag and saves on it...

I don't think the USB drive works well. I tried plugging my USB hard drive into it and nothing happened, so I doubt you can use it like you're trying to.
