Gigabit networking with Xbox 360 to Computer
Hello, I was wondering, for some reason my xbox 360 will not run the NIC at 1gbps speeds. My current setup is as follows:
Except that my ISP is Cable, not DSL. But that's not the point. Anyways, I have my 360 hooked up via a cat6 ethernet cable (not crossover, the 360 can use normal cables) to my computer, which has a gigabit NIC in it. So, both ends are gigabit. The Internet is shared off my computer's wireless. Well, whenever I turn on my xbox 360, on my computer, the connection speed says 1gbps for a split second, then changes to 100mbps.
Do I have something set up wrong?

I dont think regular cables can hold 1gbps. I know mine can only hold 100mbps.
Why would you even need more than 100mbps anyway?

Hmm, you sure the xbox can transmit 1gbps?

I remember reading on the Xbox website somewhere that it has gigabit networking, but I could be wrong.
Hmm... maybe all my attempts at getting this to work are futile.

Regular CAT5 will do gigabit, just not certified to, it will drop the speed over long distances.
CAT5E and CAT6 are both rated for GigE.
The Xbox must only have a 100Mbit NIC in it, over a crossover cable, if both NICs were GigE then they'd auto-negotiate at 1Gbit.

Also, I've checked on a few other forums, and from what I can gather the 360 does have GigE, so it must be your PC.
What NIC is in your PC?

It's an onboard NIC on the motherboard; it's a "Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller."
Also, I've heard that the 360 should do just fine with a regular non-crossover cable, which is one of the reasons why I bought a cat6 non-crossover cable instead of a crossover one, so I could use it for other things when the need came.
