transcode 360 is an awesome utility, but it just doesn't work for my use! transcode 360 attempts to take the MKV file, re-encode it to the new settings that are xbox compatible, then streams it to your XBOX... on the fly. That means that it has to do each frame, one at a time, and send it. If your PC has the "guts" to do it, it works great, for me with a P4 2Ghz PC... not so great!
I convert with GOTsent (which only takes approx 7 minutes to convert a 800Mb MKV file with my P4 2Ghz old system). It creates an MP4 output, which for some reason the XBOX doesn't read when I try to stream it (it works fine when I copy the file to a USB drive and connect directly to the XBOX!?!?). But, to work around this, I just rename the MP4 to AVI and it works! Just a note as well, I use the Windows Media Player 11 to stream to the XBOX (media share option).

WMV is simply a container format, it just defines what can go inside it! It's really no different than AVI, MPG, or MP4. It's what Video and Audio Codecs are inside the container that really makes the difference!
MKV is an open source container that allows for multiple Video, Audio, and Caption tracks to be added, and people are using it mostly because of the AC3 5.1 surround track capabilites. It's my understanding that XBOX 360 cannot read the AC3 track, and that's the hold up! (Maybe I'm wrong, if someone wants to correct me, please do!)

I'm not sure if Microsoft will allow the XBOX to directly read MKV files, as it would mean that they admit the format is better than their own! They'll most likely just add more features to their WMV container and state that it's better!
Sorry for the long "preachy" answer, work is pretty slow today!
