You could always just use mkv2vob to remux the mkv files. I use it all the time when I get Heroes or whatever in HD to play on my PS3. I don't know about WMV (I know mpg and mp4 are options), but the files work perfectly on the PS3 and Xbox for me. It takes, like, maybe 3 minutes for it to remux a 1.1 gig file.

I use "GOTSent", clean and extremely fast. Creates an output of MP4, but if you want to stream to your XBOX, just rename the output file with an AVI extension!

isn't there any way you can stream mkv files with transcode 360 or something like that so it will work fine without translating it to mkv?? what a crappy format is wmv and why does microsoft ensist to publish it?! is there any chance the will let us watch mkv files on the new xbox operating system??

transcode 360 is an awesome utility, but it just doesn't work for my use! transcode 360 attempts to take the MKV file, re-encode it to the new settings that are xbox compatible, then streams it to your XBOX... on the fly. That means that it has to do each frame, one at a time, and send it. If your PC has the "guts" to do it, it works great, for me with a P4 2Ghz PC... not so great!
I convert with GOTsent (which only takes approx 7 minutes to convert a 800Mb MKV file with my P4 2Ghz old system). It creates an MP4 output, which for some reason the XBOX doesn't read when I try to stream it (it works fine when I copy the file to a USB drive and connect directly to the XBOX!?!?). But, to work around this, I just rename the MP4 to AVI and it works! Just a note as well, I use the Windows Media Player 11 to stream to the XBOX (media share option).

WMV is simply a container format, it just defines what can go inside it! It's really no different than AVI, MPG, or MP4. It's what Video and Audio Codecs are inside the container that really makes the difference!
MKV is an open source container that allows for multiple Video, Audio, and Caption tracks to be added, and people are using it mostly because of the AC3 5.1 surround track capabilites. It's my understanding that XBOX 360 cannot read the AC3 track, and that's the hold up! (Maybe I'm wrong, if someone wants to correct me, please do!)

I'm not sure if Microsoft will allow the XBOX to directly read MKV files, as it would mean that they admit the format is better than their own! They'll most likely just add more features to their WMV container and state that it's better!

Sorry for the long "preachy" answer, work is pretty slow today!

I've been using DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD onto my hard drive, then converting it to MP4 through Handbrake. Each DVD takes about a gig, which is great on my huge external HD. My question is this, am I able to transfer the movies from my external HD to my xbox HDD? I was told by somebody you could once it is in MP4 format; but I have had no luck trying to find this feature. Thanks in advance.

I use VDub Mod with K-Lite Codec Pack on my Desktop and VDub Mod with CCCP on my Laptop. Both work flawlessly for me to re-encode MKV (or any other format for that matter) to AVI container, XviD or DivX codec, and MP3 audio so I can stream. I was just wondering though can this re-encode the audio to WMA9 so I can stream the audio in 5.1 surround sound?
