Well, I had the RROD and M$ repaired it in two days for me. I two 80MM pc fans wired to a 12V AC/DC converter and have it sitting behind my xbox, where the power and video plugs in. I tested the temps with this and I got a 10*F drop in temps. While it may not help, I like having that drop in temp, especially since I built the cooler out of spare parts I had lying around.
Here is a pic of what I am using:

Look, you can do a few things.
Nothing, and your xbox will be fine for a year, or two, then itll get RROD. Even if it is in a well ventilated area, on a hard surface, with nothing on it or around it. I know from experience, and i got RROD in a well ventilated area. Head my warning or not.
What you SHOULD do is to cool the xbox. You should add fans internaly to improve, drasticly, air flow. To open up the xbox and not void the warranty, check out Lethal NFS' tutorial. YouTube - How to take off Xbox 360 sticker . Then, again, use Lethal NFS' tutorial to add a little fan inside the xbox, to cool off the heatsink. Here is how my console is cooled (Pics) . If you feel cowboy, you can take off the X-Clamps(which are the root of the RROD) and replace them with washers. If you have any questions or want better detail, contact me, madden08 or Lethal_NFS. Madden and Lethal will proberbly be able to help you out more(they are the experts) but i can still help.
For the Tutorail on how to remove X-Clamps, check this http://copronymous.com/wp-content/up...-the-3rlod.pdf WARNING the link WILL AUTO OPEN a Adobe Reader page, so don't be scared.

Shouldnt you take out the wires directly in front of the fans, to i dunno...not be in the way of the air flow? Its like adding weight to a car, doesnt make sence.

Yeah, that was solved. That was version 1, I also added a switch so I can turn it on and off without unplugging the unit.

you don't need to spend extra money on your 360 for it to be reliable..
just keep it in a well ventelated area and it'll be fine..

Agreed it is annoying. I have had my 360 for just about a year and have had no troubles. And i am a fairly heavy gamer. I know this guy who bought a 360 on a release and has not had any troubles. Don't worry about it.

Omg can people please stop making threads like this.. It annoys me so much and a lot of other people as well. I dont understand why people are still worrying about buying a new xbox and getting the 3 rings. If you're worrying that much, then get a PS3. I bought my 360 elite about 2 weeks ago which has been my first 360 Ive ever owned and didn't even think about the faults that may occur. It runs perfectly fine and cool/smooth/cold even after 10 hours.
