Xbox wont connect to Xbox Live via ethernet

hello, this is my first post here and i was hoping someone could help me. I have had my xbox360 connected to xbox live via a ethernet-to-wired router connection which is connected to my cable modem. That setup worked just fine for several months.(please pardon my wording as im not exactly tech saavy).

Just recently, about a week ago, i went to sign on and it said something like "unable to connect to xbox live". I just assumed that my router was messed up or something. So, when i tried to fix it, i reset the router and the cable modem and tried it again, with no luck. Then, i went into "test connection" on the 360 dashboard, and it didnt even show that i was connected.

Then, i figued it could be the ethernet wire itself, so i replaced it w/ another one, still no connection. Here's the bottom line...Basically, even w/ an ethernet wire plugged in, the light doesnt respond on the router(which is lynksys by the way) or the cable modem. But both the cable modem and the router work to connect both my computers. I am thinking at this point that it might be my networking adapter in the 360 console itself ( i'm not sure if that's what it's called, but the actual jack that the plug plugs into) but ive never seen or heard of those ever to go bad, so i dont know.

If anyone has any idea what it might be, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Two possiblities: 1) Were you trying to sign on during an xbox Live update? They update every so often. 2) Did you install the router correctly to allow access to your 360? I've Ether-net router and had to set up both to recognize the connection. I hope this helps, if not I got a few more ideas on why you can't log in, but these are the most common things that happened to me.

seteve, thanks for the quick reply!

well, it wasnt an update issue b/c it hasnt connected in about a week, but i just tried to hook it back up to the router and the router doesnt recognize it (the light on the numbered port on the router dosent come on). I tried the same thing w/ the modem and it's basically the same result.

That was another thought than came to mind when I relooked over my connection. Before get a new router though, reinstall the current one or restart the modem or whatever you're using to get your connection. If the router doesn't work then it's either A) an older model and you need a new one that's Ether-net compatible, if it's not already. B) The router is, in my terms, "busted beyond repair" and you need a new one. But I've probably have close to what you have and I don't experience a lot of problems so if this don't work I may have one more idea why. Outside of my last idea, I'm not sure what's wrong then. Hope this helps.

yeah i'll probably end up getting a new router today because mine is about three years old. I mean, it worked fine on the 360 or a while, but since its so old i might just get a new one anyway. I'll let you guys know if that works. Thanks again for all your help!!

Well to avoid buying a router and not being the router, why dont you connect the xbox directly to the modem. Before connecting it, shut down both modem and 360. Then after all connected connect power back to the modem. If that works then its your router, if not then its your xbox.

That was one idea I had, but I know that some people have their computers hooked up to the router and they don't want to remove them. But yes, test the router connection too.

You have many ideas and thoughts that you dont state after the fact.
Its best to isolate a problem instead of shelling out some unneccesary cash that wont fix the issue.

You see, I think of stuff after I sumbit the post and by the time I get back to it people posted after it already. And yeah you're right I didn't put in to account the fact that it costs money. I'll think more carefully next time. Thanks for telling me.
