DO NOT GET THE FAN - they are sh*t
personally i'd sit the 360 on its arse (less chance of some muppet knockin it over and killing it)
do not move, breath on or go near the 360 while its turned on, if its knocked then 99% of the time the lense will be moved out of place and it will just ruin any game you put into the 360.
sit it down, give it around 2-3 inches space either side & at the back, try not to put it next to anything that gets hot (sky box)
don't put the power brick near the console.
just to be safe put one of these near the 360

I know that a lot of people seem to have 360's which get fairly toasty, but mine doesn't seem to get very warm at all. I tried to explain where it is with words but I was having trouble so I figured I'd quickly take a picture with my phone:
I was playing Halo 2 yesterday for about five hours straight and the air coming out the back felt warm but not hot, it was at a fairly good temperature. I know Halo 2 isn't a 360 game but the 360 has to emulate an xbox classic which takes up some resources, i think it ends up being harder for the 360 to run games from the original xbox than it is for it to run the 360 games (but i dunno). The room temperature was probably about 24C.
Anyway, point is that I don't think it matters whether it is vertical or horizontal. It should be able to keep itself cool either way, well at least on the new ones (since mine is new lol). I know that people were worried about the 360s toasting cause they got soo hot, maybe Microsoft has fixed this on newer models?
Oh and if your wondering why I have it in between that gap rather than just on top of the table, then the answer is to protect it from my little sister who would just smash the thing lol.

My console also never gets hot. It gets a little warm and thats it. I played GTA IV for 5 and a half hours when i first got it and the air out the back was warm.

My friend with the Halo 3 X360 stands it up, so I told him to lay it down, so it lasts longer. ALWAYS keep it horizontal, give it space to breathe, keep the room at a good temp, etc.
