HDMI and Optical cable hook up?

I bought a new TV and need to hook up my Xbox 360. Here is my plan, run a HDMI cable from my Xbox360 to my TV for video/audio in, run an optical cable from my TV to my surround sound reciever. Now for my questions, will any HDMI cable work, will my TV send audio to my reciever through the optical cable? My TV is a Panasonic Plasma 50" if that helps. I am trying to avoid buying the MS HDMI cable or doing the case modd.

Any HDMI cable will do. I purchased two for ten bucks at Meritline. One for my DirecTV and the other for my 360. There all the same, no need to spend $50+ for a cable.
