To answer your question, no, the tray doesn't open, it just says open tray and nothing will play.
So can I just get any new disc drive or do I need a specific one to look for ????

It sounds like the drive PCB has had it. My old Premium did it, and i ended up chucking the console. Mine just kept spitting discs back out (not the laser!)
You could replace the drive, but you'll need the DVD (AES) Key and to flash it to the new drive. You'd be better getting the same model drive, i've never tried using different makes.
Update: I found this on replacing a Samsung with a Hitachi.....Replacing a Samsung with a Hitachi
That is if your old drive is operable enough for the AES key to be extracted..... Hope this is useful.

I fixed mine!
Had same problem and gave up trying to fix it until a friend told me to just go buy a laser lens cleaner. Fixed it and works like new now! 5 bucks at target. Couldn't believe it...
Hope it works for you.
Peace!
Steve

It sounds like you'll have to send it in to Microsoft.

I replaced the laser in my ben-q/phillips and it worked great again for two weeks. Now, same 'open tray' error. I want a whole new drive but am freaked about the flash procedure.

You just seem like the typical "enthusiast" that thinks he knows it all because he's fixed one or two consoles.
It is the same thing, it is electronically programmable, parallel or serial so it is a generic term i and the IT industry use. Flash chips are commonly known as EEPROM because they can be reprogrammed. When larger amounts of static data are to be stored (such as in USB flash drives and optical drives) a specific type of EEPROM such as flash memory is more economical than traditional EEPROM devices. But they are still referred to as EEPROM, regardless if it is Flash or ROM type. The chips are read only until they get placed in Write Data mode, even a flash chip.
Each EEPROM device typically has its own set of OP-Code instructions to map to different functions. Some of the common operations on SPI EEPROM devices are:
* Write Enable (WREN)
* Write Disable (WRDI)
* Read Status Register (RDSR)
* Write Status Register (WRSR)
* Read Data (READ)
* Write Data (WRITE)
Other operations supported by some EEPROM devices are:
* Program
* Sector Erase
* Chip Erase commands
You're getting EPROM mixed up with EEPROM. EPROMs can't be erased electrically, and are programmed via hot carrier injection onto the floating gate. Erase is via an ultraviolet light source, although in practice many EPROMs are encapsulated in plastic that is opaque to UV light, and are "one-time programmable".
Look it up on Wikipedia, you might learn something, i contributed to that article when it was written.
For other people to learn, EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
