There are many off-road games out there but do any of them really stand out? Read on to see why I feel Dirt 2 stands out over the rest.
Graphics - 9/10
The graphics are outstanding and really show the detail. Throughout the races you will encounter car damage which affects the way your car handles. This option can also be turned off. The courses themselves look amazing as you will be driving in like 8 different areas ranging from L.A to Japan.
Sound - 8/10
The vehicle sounds and crashes sound great but the music could use a little help and the other racers talking can start to get repeitive. Running this in 5.1 sounds great too. While driving I can hear a crash in my back rear speaker and when people talk to you, you can tell which side of your car they are on. The other drivers like to talk smack while driving.
Gameplay - 9/10
The menu layout is very cool and very easy to use. It is set up like you parked your crappy trailor outside of a race where you need to sign up and pick your car. Once you pick your first race you are given your first car for free. There are 3 difficulties to choose from and the harder you choose, the more money you can earn. You will also be earning your race classes the further you rank up. I believe that level 30 is the rank cap and you start off as a rookie (level 1) and rank up through Pro and on to Legendary (I think, I am not there yet). There are many different car views including a pretty cool cockpit view.
There are also faceoffs where you race against one person to earn their respect. Once a person likes you, you can team up with them in the team races. Other races are: X-Games tournaments, World Tours, and single competitions. All of which can be played online.
There is also an flashback feature that lets you rewind your last few seconds before a crash and you can start that spot over again. I personally do not use this feature.
Unlockables - 9/10
As you start ranking up you will earn unlockable items. The types of unlockables are:
- More car horns
- More Liveries
- Dashboard ornaments
- Rear view mirror ornaments
- New races
You will win something after every race.
Online - N/A
Up to 8 players online.
I have been so busy playing single mode that I have not had a chance to jump online.
Overall - 9/10
The game is setup so that anyone can play and have fun. The controls are smooth and the rewards are all there. Courses are not hard to navigate and the features can be adjusted to the users liking.
This game gets Lethal's Stamp of Approval!
