Thanks for the reponses both of you. Im considering just doing it myself. Ive looked around a bit at some tutorials and i think i can do it myself. Im feeling pretty confident about trying this now haha.. If i can pick that one up for 50 bucks or so with the cables im gona go for it and try and fix the thing.. And if i dont fix it i wont be out much money and i could prolly sell the power brick and make back half the money atleast..

this is my 1st post in this forum.

i bought a x360 from ebay last wk. i am pretty handy with a soldering iron and with electronics. i went in this knowing that i could possibly be losing money by buying a broken x360.

i had a co-worker give me a controller for free and i looked for an x360 with the power/av cables. i bought it for $100 flat, but the auction said it had an e74 error and that is what i was looking for. but when i got it, it had and e73 error, not what i was looking for. i looked around online and found no fixes for this error in particular. so i got back in contact with the seller and he happily accepted it back with no probs. i got lucky on that one.

i just bought another one on ebay a few hours ago with an x clamp fix and the error displayed stating that update has failed. this one came with nothing. so i figure that it can be justified by buying the power/av cables without breaking the bank.

i feel if anyone does buy one off ebay, then they need to know they run the risk of losing $40-150

Ya im not quite sure i want to buy one off of ebay.. Ive looked around and almost none broken ones come with the cables. Also alot of those xboxs are prolly not fixable, I assume they have already tried to fix them if they deal with so many of them, like the stores on ebay that sell a bunch. Just my opinion. Also i dont see any that go for around 50 or so and im not willing to pay 100 bucks for a broken one..

If your using ebay then your chance of finding one that can be fixed is slim. I have bought lots of broken 360's but you never know what kind you get. Last one was an Elite. Anyways had a horrible X clamp done to it, had a core dvd bezel? But it worked after I did the X clamp correctly. Over the last 30-40 broken xbox 360's 2-3 were complete busts. Sometimes you get an Ebay seller that sells custom built broken 360's. What those sellers do is they get alot of broken 360's in bulk, and put broken 360's together. Like they claim it had RROD, and once you fix that it has a broken dvd drive or a dvd drive from another system. Those you can never fix. You have to be careful.

That is exactly what i was thinking (I think i actually said that in one post on this thread) That its gona be a pretty small chance i will get one off ebay thats fixable, Cuz im sure most have already tried to be fixed and didnt work or something like that, and exactly like you said, ive read feedback where people purchased the RROD one and got one with a busted dvd drive or some other problem also. So im gona stay away from ebay for that. I was thinking craigslist as long as it hasnt been opened. I havent had any luck yet tho. Doesnt help im in a small town 2 hours away from the only town that has alot of people.

Okay, here is how you get ones off Ebay that can be fixed. I have been doing it for a bit now w/ pretty good success but now I know which ones to buy. Only buy the ones w/ 3 red lights that still have the original Microsoft seal intact or if the seller guarantees that the x-clamps have not been removed. If you get a unit like this you can fix it no problem. When I started out I was buying the cheapest ones w/ red lights that I could get and some were all hacked up by people who had no idea what they were doing. I have found pennies and erasers on the bottom of the motherboard and some people just go in and tighten the crap out of the studs on the heatsinks. I don't know what they are thinking.
I have bought "console only" for $50 before and had them going in 30 minutes. Most of the time the average price for just a console is about $75. I have bought custom modded boxes for cheap and complete systems w/ red lights for $120 and I even got one complete w/ hdd for $118 I believe it was last week. I try to get on Ebay when I think everyone else isn't looking also.
You have to do a little research and there may be some trial and error but you can make some money off these things. I try to make enough to justify the hobby and of course buy myself something pretty(as my girlfriend calls it) in the process.
My username is ford150trucks on Ebay is you want to see some of the auctions I have won or maybe check out one of my custom consoles.
If you choose to buy a unit and try it I wish you good luck and let me know how it turns out for you.

Ya i would like to get one with the seal still on so i know they havent messed with the thing already.. I dont think ill be buying one for a little while but once i get the money again to spend on one i think i will try it out. I found one on craigslist, it has been opened, the guy claims they didnt do anything inside of it tho. Hes asking 55 wiht the power brick and A/V cable. The thing is still taken apart. but like i said before its a couple hours away cuz thats the only big city close by so i cant just go look at it. I dont have the cash anymore or id offer him like 55-60 shipped for the thing. I will be keeping my eye out for them tho, I will get one eventually and try and fix the thing. I will let you know how it turns out once i get to it.
